![]() 8th grade students started inking their plates today to create the first level of their print. They selected complementary colors for their paper and ink; on Monday they will finish carving out additional details and ink black and white to go over the ink they printed today. Yesterday students worked on creating their images to turn into prints. Today, we transferred the pictures and began to carve out the designs. It is really fun to see how students are getting into this project. This project would not have been possible without the funding from the National Art Education Foundation, who awarded a $200 grant for printmaking supplies like the blocks being cut into for this project.
I am excited for the next step in this project, which is finishing up the first cut away, inking, and printing before moving onto the next phase of carving, inking, and printing. As you can see from the images above, students are fast at work with their animations. Some brought in things from home to animate, while others are using cut paper and Photoshop. It is fun to see the different animations come together and I look forward to sharing them when we are done. 8th grade students are progressing with their project. Today we went through four artists who use printmaking to create their images. Rather than me writing about it, you can check out the Prezi below. We will start to transfer our edited images tomorrow so we can begin the printmaking process. Check out one response to this presentation by an 8th grade student: My conclusion overall would be that even though these artists use a similar process to make their pieces, they all have differents meanings to them and they depict completely different things with different meanings and moods in them. But some of them compared to one another, such as Kathe's to Swoons, they both have these sketchy parts to them but the mood/feeling is completely different. I think that Andy Warhol is a very creative person thus his success and I have this feel coming from Banksy's work that is like a free feeling, also similar to Swoon's. My overall favorite would probably be Swoon and Banksy's work. -- Kathy, 4th hour Students are working on the MacBooks this week in various ways. 7th grade students are using them to create animations while 8th grade students are using them to finish up and get started on the next project.
7th grade students started planning their animations yesterday after looking at a number of ways animations are created. Today was spent finishing up their scripts and storyboards and tomorrow everyone should be ready to begin their animations. We also looked at these examples from another school. It was fun for students to see what other students their age are working on in other schools. 8th grade students are working on prints, and as you can see from the images above, they are using expressive portraits as an option to create their prints. Other students are using their hands or shoes as the subject. Tomorrow we will start the process of printing by transferring the image onto a block and carving out our designs. It was a great day to kick off Thanksgiving break! Students were able to check out the new MacBook Airs that were purchased as a result of the technology bond that passed last school year and use them to take pictures of their work and upload them to Moodle. I also went through some basic usage tips and we were able to check out Photoshop CS6 (which is quite an upgrade from the CS3 we had been using for the past 5 years).
I am really excited for the opportunity to use this equipment in the coming months and once again ramp up the collaboration and creation among students as a result of these kinds of tools. Thank you to the community of Byron Center for passing that bond and giving this great opportunity to our students. I hope everyone has a restful break, because we have a TON of awesome projects lined up when we return on Monday! monster class from Janine Campbell on Vimeo. Tomorrow is the last day before Thanksgiving break. Here is a video to see what 8th graders have been working on and will hopefully finish up before taking off for some important family time.
Printmaking from Janine Campbell on Vimeo. So, this week we did a lot of different things in the art room. In addition to skyping with an award winning artist, students also worked on creating some potentially award winning works.
In 8th grade, students worked on glazing their Anthropomorphic Pottery pieces as well as create their plush monsters in the style of Takashi Murakami. In 7th grade, students worked on finishing their comics, glazing their creatures, and worked on printmaking. The printmaking project was partially funded through a SHIP grant from the National Art Education Foundation. I was able to purchase inks and plates for students to print with and I am grateful for funding opportunities like these to help students experience art making opportunities that would otherwise not be available. Thank you again to the National Art Education Foundation for your support! 8th graders will be starting their printmaking project when we return from Thanksgiving break using materials purchased as a result of these funds! Check out all of the crazy fun we had this week creating in the classroom below in the collage I made using this app. Today was no ordinary day in the classroom. Today we got to Skype with author and illustrator of the web comic series The Chapel Chronicles, Emma T. Capps. She answered questions about her process, interests, characters, and revealed some great tricks of the trade. She was incredibly gracious with her time and even talked with students who were interested in her feedback about their work. I appreciate how using this type of technology offers students to meet artists from around the country and connect with them in meaningful ways. Thanks again to Emma, who was such a great guest today in our class! Skype With Emma T. Capps from Janine Campbell on Vimeo. Here are just a couple of the hallways that were completed last week. You can see the full gallery of both 7th and 8th grade attempts on our Artsonia gallery!
7th grade students are finishing up their comics this week as well as adding glaze to their clay creatures before their final firing. Students looked at the work of teen artist Emma T. Capps for their comics before coming up with their own ideas on how to tell a story with pictures and words. From man eating cupcakes, to stories of space aliens, it has been fun to read all of the creative comics from these students.
8th grade students are using the supplies from our latest funded DonorsChoose project to create their Takashi Murakami inspired creatures. You can see the lesson on the ClipCards of the December 2012 SchoolArts Magazine, where Leigha VanderKlok's monster is on display. It is a fun project and we should get started sewing soon! |
