7th grade students finished their Zentangle Portraits earlier this week that were inspired by the 1960s. It was fun to see how they used text, pattern, line, color and shape to complete their works before posting it to our online gallery.

8th grade students are working on Monsters this week, inspired by Takashi Murakami. It will be fun to see these sewn creatures come to life as students finish their works tomorrow and Thursday. Students are also felting details onto their works using the Donors Choose materials we received earlier in the school year.

Project Funded!

I am super excited to announce that we have gotten our third project fully funded through DonorsChoose.org! Due to the generous support of donors from Michigan and beyond, 8th grade students will be learning to sew some awesome Monsters soon!

This sewing project was first taught last year as a result of a session I went to at the Michigan Art Education Association Conference last year. I saw the project and knew my students would do an awesome job with it (and of course they did, check out last year's project here). This year we can make them even more AMAZING with the funding provided from generous supporters of the arts! Thank you so much for your support and I cannot wait to get started with this project!

8th grade students are finishing their monsters before moving onto their comics that use the monsters as the main characters. We are using this article to help us get in the mode of telling a story through pictures.

8th graders are also getting geared up for their final video projects on the artists and materials we have studied throughout the semester. This project will help them get ready for their final exams.

8th grade students are continuing their work on making monsters by finishing their patterns, cutting them out, and applying it to fabric. After cutting the fabric, they are sewing their pieces together and stuffing with fabric fill.

This is a fun project to teach and students like being able to make the funny little creatures based on the work by Takashi Murakami.

I can't wait to see them finished!

Students are continuing to work on their projects this week. 7th grade students selected the materials they wanted to work with before applying various color concepts to the divided areas of their mandalas and 8th grade students finished their plans, before making and cutting their patterns to apply to felt.

Enjoy the examples of monsters from 8th grade Visual Arts class! They all will be posted to our class gallery by the end of the week. This was a fun project and students learned a lot about sewing, working with textiles, as well as artist Takashi Murakami. If students did not finish their work in class, they are expected to work on it tonight and turn it in tomorrow before the festivities start as a part of Activity Day.

8th grade students finished their monster prints, patterns, and started cutting out and assembling their feltie figures. These plush dolls are going to be a riot when they are finished. It is always interesting to see how a print translates into a 3D sculpture... Here is an example of the work by Dave DeVries, who took images drawn of his niece and made them into realistically painted monsters. This will be the last 2011 project for 8th grade students.

As 8th grade students finish up their prints from last week, they are moving onto the creation of monsters from felt. The premise for the project is to make yourself into a monster via the materials available. It will be interesting to see these creatures take shape over the final weeks before winter break. As a lead into this project, I started thinking about the classic animated feature, The Nightmare Before Christmas. This topic of animation also plays into what 7th graders will be finishing up this week as they export their movies from Photoshop and edit them in MovieMaker or Premiere. As we get into the Holiday season, I thought about taking a look at it with new eyes, that of Jack's.
