Having a long break includes having some extra time to try new types of art and discover various fun websites to help that creation. Above is an image I made last night after checking out a site that Mrs. Marshall posted on the NIS website.

The Byron Center High School students did a phenomenal job this year at the West Central Michigan Scholastic Art Awards. With 40 entries recognized, students placed in Drawing, Photography, Sculpture, Ceramics and Glass, Painting, Digital Art, Mixed Media, and Film and Animation Categories. High School teachers Greg Reinstein, Julie VanderLaan, and Molly Marshall all had students place. I also had a student place for his Mixed Media piece and Digital Art he made in my class. In addition to the strong showing at this year's awards, Michelle Farias was awarded an American Vision Nomination, showcasing her work as one of the five best from all entries submitted in our region this year. "Captive," shown below, will now compete with American Vision Nominees from across the country at the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Gold Keys will also go on to compete at the National Level. Below are some examples of the Gold and Silver Key Winners as well as the Honorable Mentions, but does not include all winners from BCHS. The 2012 Scholastic Art Awards for the West Central Michigan Region were announced today and I am very proud to say that BCWMS had the most Middle School awards out of all other participating schools! In addition, the high school also received recognition with 40 award winners and one American Vision Nominee! Below are the BCWMS works selected for the awards. Students who won Silver and Gold Keys will participate in a show at Kendall College of Art and Design with an awards ceremony to celebrate the artists on February 12th. Gold Keys will move onto the national competition; winners will be announced this Spring. GOLD KEYS SILVER KEYS HONORABLE MENTION
Enjoy the examples of monsters from 8th grade Visual Arts class! They all will be posted to our class gallery by the end of the week. This was a fun project and students learned a lot about sewing, working with textiles, as well as artist Takashi Murakami. If students did not finish their work in class, they are expected to work on it tonight and turn it in tomorrow before the festivities start as a part of Activity Day.
8th grade students are finishing up their monsters today and tomorrow before submitting them onto Moodle. They have used all kinds of embellishments to create these creatures that represent some aspect of their own personality. If you were a monster, what might you look like?
Student work was submitted for the Scholastic Art Awards today. Here are only a few examples of the stellar works from students grades 7-12 whose work will compete for prizes in this year's competition. Results will be announced on Friday. The work is also on display until the end of the week at the Van Singel Fine Arts Center as a part of the 1st-12th grade District Art Show.
7th grade students are working on a new project today surrounding the topic of collage. After looking through this presentation, students started on their own collages from old magazines and glue. This is a fun way to learn about synthetic cubism, various artists, as well as how to apply the technique to your own work. I look forward to seeing all of the ways students use collage for this last project before our two week break! Congrats the to the students above whose work will be featured in the next edition of Celebrating Art. Last year we had four students receive recognition. Good luck to these students as their work goes onto another round of competition, where they could win $100. In addition to current students having success in this latest competition, I recently found out that SchoolArts Magazine has published a piece by Jacob Mahoney in the January issue. We have had several students featured in SchoolArts over the past year. Jessica Marsh had her work featured in the August/September issue from earlier this school year; Tena Baar and Jordyn Horton both had work featured in an article I had written last April. SchoolArts Magazine has been a leading Art Education magazine since 1901. BCWMS Visual Arts students will also be featured in the 2013 McGraw Hill editions of ArtTalk and Exploring Art. I worked as a contributor to Exploring Art and look forward to seeing the book when it comes out! 8th grade students are starting to sew their monsters today. They will work on these creatures all through next week.
Tena finished her portrait after weeks of extra work and dedication. As you can see, it is pretty amazing! Her piece will now compete at the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards with other students from BCWMS.
