Today was a great day. Not only was it Friday and Homecoming, but it was also the day that ceramist Paul Flickinger came to talk to us about clay!

Thanks to funding from BCFAB, we were able to have this great artist come to us and share his talents and experiences working with clay. This demonstration will help students when they begin their own clay projects next week.

Paul also made a variety of vessels today that he left behind to be auctioned off for our program.

The large bowl you see is going to be our auction bowl for Empty Bowls this Spring!

7th and 8th grade students logged onto Moodle today to complete various tasks online.

7th grade students used the links to start an Artsonia webquest and 8th grade students used it to view and respond to a presentation that is getting them ready for their next project with clay.

Moodle has become an important tool in the art room to help record and track progress with projects and I look forward to seeing how this new tool will enhance the way students learn and view new information in Art.

8th grade students finished their projects and turned them in using Moodle today.

Students worked on two different projects that both used ordinary objects as inspiration.

First students worked on the abstract contour line drawings in glue shown below. They used warm or cool watercolor paint to create an abstract wash over the glue and then outlined the changes in value with sharpie.

Students then used Jim Dine as inspiration to create the tool drawings featured on the left. We used our erasers as a drawing tool as well as chalk pastels to activate the negative spaces around the object. You can see both projects on our class gallery.

7th grade students finished their Celtic inspired symmetrical knots today and turned them in using Moodle. Students explored concepts of line, pattern, color, and balance in this work. We also learned some art history and using mixed media. This was a fun project and our class gallery shows the hard work and creativity tied together in this neat little knot.

Since I was off to ArtPrize last Friday, I did not get to see students Doodle Bombs from last week until today. Last week students were asked to use the doodle bomb to answer the question "Who are you?" As you can see, students used symbols and words all doodled together to do just that. As a result, I now know a little more about my students and you can see the full list on our gallery.

a winning year (and it is only september)

I am happy to announce that the trend for this year is winning in every way!

We are only 3 weeks into school and I have already taken my students on a field trip, had a student nominated by Artsonia as an Artist of the Week, and have managed to increase our abilities in the classroom by receiving over $800 in additional funds from grants and contests!

Again it is only 3 weeks into school, so hopefully this is a trend that continues.

The first grant received this school year was from the Michigan Art Education Association. With the monies awarded, I was able to purchase additional digital cameras, green screens, flash drives, and tripods for video production in my 7th and 8th grade classes.

Picture
The second grant received this school year was from the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids. The funds received from this organization was directly linked to the trip my students took yesterday to attend workshops and view art as a part of Artcation Day during ArtPrize.

This is the second year we have applied for and received this funding from the Arts Council, which allows our student to travel to this great event.

Picture
The most current funding resource has been from The Teaching Palette, an online resource for Art Teachers by Art Teachers. They asked for teachers to submit their favorite lesson plan, and I did.

When they did their drawing for a winner of a DonorsChoose. org $100 gift card, my name emerged and now I get to use the funds to provide more supplies for my students!

With so much success, so early in the year, I cannot wait to see how the rest of the school year unfolds and what other opportunities will be sent our way as a result!

We had an awesome time today at ArtPrize! BCPS students ruled the walkways as we interacted with art and artists all over the city of Grand Rapids. This was a great way to spend the day and we were lucky that the weather gave us such an enjoyable view of all the outdoor sites. You can see a video of our day here.

One of the highlights of today include working with Shawn Smith, whose work is on display at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. He creates sculptures that look like pixelated images. We also covered A LOT of the city and really tried to see as much as possible while we could. It was really great to talk with so many different artists and hear about how and why they made what they did. I enjoyed myself so much today, I even went back this evening for another round of viewing. I will probably be down again before the contest ends on October 9th.

For students who did not get a change to attend with us, I am offering extra credit points if you take your picture in front of your favorite piece and bring me the picture to hang on my All About ArtPrize bulletin board. So, go out there and have fun - it is for school after all, right? The due date on the extra points is October 10th.

7th grade students applied their knowlege of color by choosing between warm and cool colors to contrast their knot and background. They also mixed media by using colored pencil for the knot and watercolor for the background. I first saw this lesson in an issue of Arts and Activities Magazine for High School - but as you can see, my 7th graders are definitely rockin' the knot!
