Way to Go, Ava!

Over the course of this summer, I have invited students to upload work via classroom mode on Artsonia with a chance to win prizes. So far one student has really taken me up on that challenge and I am happy to announce that by being the first student to upload her work, Ava wins a bonus gift card from Artsonia where she will be able to purchase an item of her choice from their online gift shop. 2013 Environmental Art Competition

The winners for the 4th Annual Sooper Art Competition were announced this evening and I am proud to announce that BCWMS students Anna Pavlak and Emma McCloud were among those whose work was awarded.

Both students will have their work on display at the Grand Rapids Art Museum and receive $100 prize for winning. Their work also has a chance of winning the Mark Heckman Special Merit Award where they could win an additional $250. The winners will be recognized at a ceremony on December 14th.

We have participated in all four years of this event and it offers such a special opportunity for kids to share their talents in a meaningful way. Congratulations to the winners from Nickels and the High School, as well. BCHS Winner Ethan Karnes will celebrate his second win at this competition (he won with this work as my student four years ago).

ArtStart Winner!

Today was the big announcement for the ArtPrize top ten and the ten winners selected for the first ever ArtStart Online Youth Competition. As you have read in previous posts, students in my class have been working hard and creating works inspired by ArtPrize for this competition. Today they announced the winners and I am proud that one of my students was among them! Congrats to Emma and her work entitled "Blaze" for receiving recognition at today's event. Here is Emma fast at work at the beginning of this drawing:

Getting Ready for ArtPrize

While I am preparing for students to arrive in my classroom within the next few weeks, I wanted to give everyone a heads-up on this really cool opportunity offered duringArtPrize this year:

I am planning to take students to ArtPrize in September (a specific date will be announced tomorrow, along with details on how to get involved). This field trip has been a tradition for the past few years and I am looking forward to offering this opportunity to students again this year. Check out the video of our experience last year:

Summer Artsonia Challenge

I am interested in what students are making over the summer and would like to challenge parents and students to post works to their Artsonia accounts before August 22nd (both Jitter's Day and Parent Orientation meetings).

Each week, work from around the world is selected as finalists for their weekly online voting competition. summer success

Nothing beats getting summer news about students who go out of their way to get involved in the Arts. I am so excited to hear that Tena's piece shown above (who also won a Gold Key at our Regional Scholastic Awards), won second place at a local Art competition at Sandy Pines Resort. Her piece placed second (and a $100 prize) among 30 other Adult entries - yes, that is right - ADULT ENTRIES. Tena is going to be heading into High School next year. It has been an honor to see this artist grow over the past three years and I cannot wait to see what else this girl makes. we recycle

Before the school year ended, students helped me recycle well over 300lbs of clay that had been building up for the past few years. Here is a short video I made of the process and how students helped. This video is entered in the latest Next Vista for Learning video competition. It was a fun way to clean up a material that is ready to be used again in the fall! I am very happy and relieved that when I go to my classroom I have moistened clay in bags, rather than broken bits of projects gone wrong!

custom culture

Even though my DE students' shoes did not make it into the top 50 national vote for the 2012 Van's Custom Culture Contest, I am still very proud of their efforts seen below. I think they did a very nice job collaborating and combining their ideas to create the outer-space themed shoes that represent Art, Music, Sports, and Local Flavor. Good luck to the schools who are now being voted on, and make sure to vote for your favorites here!
