animals galore

As 8th grade students are working on their figures as shown in yesterday's posting, 7th graders are making their African Animal Mancala Game Boards.

From Servals to Zebras and Lions to Rinos, students have selected a vast array of animals as the form for their game boards.

Today those students are finishing the construction of the animals and then adding the mache.

Next week we will finish the project by adding color, either local or imagined.

Whatever colors students choose to finish their work one thing is certain - these projects are both fun to look at and will be fun to play when they finish!

7th and 8th grade students are finishing up the creation of their forms today and then using mache to give the forms a smooth and paintable surface.

Students will be using mache for the next few days before using the donated latex paint from Xrite to complete the project.

Paper mache means "chewed paper" in French and has a long history in art and utility item creation. Contemporary artists also enjoy this medium and one of my favorites is Dan Reeder who has authored many books and is the artist behind the video below.

7th and 8th grade students are starting their sculptures today after spending yesterday planning them out.

8th grade students are making action figures and 7th grade students are making their mancala game boards based on African Animals.

Both students will be using paper mache over their base structures before painting them later next week.

Before constructing your game board, you need to choose an animal to create.

Check out this site to get ideas about an animal for your Mancala game design. Once you and your partner have chosen an animal, post your choice with your first names and class hour. Each group must have a different animal as their inspiration.

From sponges that turn to cows, to rocketships that turn to faces - students displayed a great talent of adlib as they transformed each others' doodles into a colorfully charged piece of work!

On June 17-18, the 2nd annual West Michigan Chalk Art Festival in downtown Byron Center.

You can enter as an individual or as a team. If you would like to form a team with Mrs. Campbell and other art students, please email her ideas.

Congrats to the 24 students selected to attend the Meijer Gardens Field Trip on May 6th.

It was a tough decision as many students applied to participate. If you were not selected, keep your eyes and ears open for other opportunities to participate in various art activities in the future.

I am looking for 3-4 volunteers to help supervise the trip; if your parents or guardians are interested, please have them contact me.

art game: exquisite corpse...

This parlor game was started by a group of Surrealist artists in the 1930s as a way to experiment with words and images. The name "exquisite corpse" comes from the first poem created from the game: "The exquisite corpse will drink the young wine."

To create theirs, 8th grade students created a full figure and then cut their person into thirds to be reassembled like the image to the left.

Afterwards, students worked as a group to create a large drawing that was constantly switching between participants and responding to what each other drew.

This video shows a similar process in action.
