2013 Environmental Art Competition

The winners for the 4th Annual Sooper Art Competition were announced this evening and I am proud to announce that BCWMS students Anna Pavlak and Emma McCloud were among those whose work was awarded.

Both students will have their work on display at the Grand Rapids Art Museum and receive $100 prize for winning. Their work also has a chance of winning the Mark Heckman Special Merit Award where they could win an additional $250. The winners will be recognized at a ceremony on December 14th.

We have participated in all four years of this event and it offers such a special opportunity for kids to share their talents in a meaningful way. Congratulations to the winners from Nickels and the High School, as well. BCHS Winner Ethan Karnes will celebrate his second win at this competition (he won with this work as my student four years ago).

Today was the big announcement for the ArtPrize top ten and the ten winners selected for the first ever ArtStart Online Youth Competition. As you have read in previous posts, students in my class have been working hard and creating works inspired by ArtPrize for this competition. Today they announced the winners and I am proud that one of my students was among them! Congrats to Emma and her work entitled "Blaze" for receiving recognition at today's event. Here is Emma fast at work at the beginning of this drawing:

I am interested in what students are making over the summer and would like to challenge parents and students to post works to their Artsonia accounts before August 22nd (both Jitter's Day and Parent Orientation meetings).

If you are having a hard time knowing how to get started, check out this awesome video on creating creatures from Heather Weideman :
If you are unsure of your child's username or account password, please email me and I will help you get logged in to post the artwork.

Winners will receive Artsonia gift store merchandise of the work uploaded to the site before August

Dillon1484 Artist of the Week Finalist
Since the first week of school, students have been posting work to our online gallery on Artsonia. Each week, work from around the world is selected as finalists for their weekly online voting competition. This week we have a BCWMS student up for the title for the Photoshop piece he created last week.

Help our class and Dillon win by voting for his work every day starting now!

we recycle

Before the school year ended, students helped me recycle well over 300lbs of clay that had been building up for the past few years. Here is a short video I made of the process and how students helped. This video is entered in the latest Next Vista for Learning video competition. It was a fun way to clean up a material that is ready to be used again in the fall! I am very happy and relieved that when I go to my classroom I have moistened clay in bags, rather than broken bits of projects gone wrong!

what a week!

It has been almost a week since the last post! In that time students are busy getting all kinds of competition pieces ready. From the Meijer Great Choices PSA contest, to the national STEM challenge, to the Blick Printmaking contest - there is a lot of choose from. Students also finished their Doogle 4 Google entries today and I will be posting them on Artsonia shortly.

finished grid portraits

8th grade students finished their grid expansion portraits based on the work of Chuck Close on Friday.

Each student had to digitally edit a picture of themselves to then work from using a grid.

Once students transfered their images by drawing in the shapes of value from the photo onto the paper (going square by square on the grid), they then had the task of selecting which materials they were going to choose to fill in the value.

Students selected a diverse array of materials; some of the materials they had used before and some were experimenting with media for the first time.

This is always a fun project to teach because it incorporates math, history, social issues, and art. I know some of these students are planning to put their work in the Sargent Art and Celebrating Art competitions - GOOD LUCK!

Here is another great opportunity to participate in a competition that will not only yeild in the opportunity of having your work published in a book, but also some cash prizes!

In order to participate, you have to get the permission slip below signed by you and your parent and then I will be able to take the digital image of your selected work and upload it to the contest website.

When looking at previous winners, I know that my students can definitely hang with what has been awarded in the past!

So, look through your artsonia gallery and see which piece you would like to put into this contest - the deadline is MAY 5th.

Also, feel free to check out the other contest opportunities coming up by clicking on the "Contests" tag on the sidebar.

As opportunities arise for you to shine, I will continue to post information and requirements to participate!

Good luck and I look forward to seeing what you plan to submit.
