finished masks

Students finished their masks today and turned them in for a grade.

Some chose to compete in the Scholastic competition, but know that they have until FRIDAY to turn in their essay and contest form.

It was a pleasure to see how these images have progressed since last week. They are bright and full of energy, just like the artists who have created them.

Students finished their planning by drawing thumbnail sketches before starting their final pieces.

When developing the rubric yesterday as a class, each hour decided that it was important for these masks to show an aspect of their personality.

Like alter egos, these masks will be exaggerated forms that show off something about the person who created it.

When designing these masks, students are given the opportunity to choose the materials used to execute the design.

Although these masks are being designed as 2D models for the Scholastic Mask Contest, students could turn them into 3D forms when finished.

the modern mask

Nick Cave is an African American artist whose modern take on the mask is like something out of a muppet show.

His colorful "soundsuits" are a part of his performance art pieces that look to engage the cultures of those who view them.

Students are using this artist among others as a springboard to designing their own masks for a Scholastic Art competition.
