Week Twelve

Short Week

This was a short week. I mean, a two-day kind of short week. So, what do we do with that time to make it meaningful and productive? A couple of things. In addition to students working on Challenge 3 works, students also researched and wrote about artists of their choice (focusing on the use of media and what they can learn from viewing the work) and uploaded images from last week's "speed dating" challenge.

Here are some highlights of those completed tasks:

Mixed Media Speed Dating Challenge

Picture
Paige S.: While creating this artwork, I learned a lot of new art techniques. This included, adding texture and how to draw things up close. I learned that you can use an ink quill to add details to your art, which I never would have thought could be a art material. Plus, I learned how collaging can also be an art technique. I also learned that it is fine if your art isn't perfect, and it's ok to not have a perfect, planned out, background. Overall, I learned a lot of new techniques and had an enjoyable time creating this work.
Picture
Colton S.: During this activity I learned a lot more about different types of media and how to use them. I am very excited to experiment with these materials in new ways for another project.
Picture
Brandt. B: I really like this piece I made because of its creativity. I like the material choice I used and how I blended everything together into one picture. I really like the time and value I put into this artwork and the result that came out.
Picture
Logan M.: I learned to use many techniques to make art and found out that I should not use the same type of materials all the time.
Picture
Braedan H.: This artwork was made with many materials such as gel pens, pastels, paint and a few others. The most used material was a paint, either in sponge form or spray bottle form. My favorite material to use was the gell pen.

Artist of Interest

Our classroom is very fortunate to have access to a lot of resources thanks to grants and donations raised throughout the year. One way I use funding to add resources to my classroom is through the investment of a classroom subscription to Scholastic Art Magazine. I have subscribed to them for years and use them as a way to introduce students to new artists they they get to select from the online archives.

Once a month, students are asked to go into the website and select an artist to write about using a specific rubric. For this round, students were asked to explain how the material the artist uses impacts they way they view it, to explain how they can learn from this artist in their own work, and to use art vocabulary in the process.

Thanksgiving and Giving Thanks

Picture
My husband and I at the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, TN.
I am very fortunate for many things I have in my life and the experiences I have been able to have over the years. For Thanksgiving this year, I had the great opportunity to travel to Tennessee and visit Nashville, Chattanooga, and the Smoky Mountains. Along the way, we visited new sites that I was urged to travel to by my fellow Art teachers.

I want to give a special thanks to Ted, Allison, and Cassie for guiding me to visit super special places like The Parthenon, The Frist, and the Hunter Museum. It was a great time for view works of art and also enjoy nature.

I hope everyone had a wonderful time this holiday weekend with their friends and family and that you had a moment to reflect on and enjoy the things that give you pause for thanks.

What it Means to Win

The above image is from last year's award ceremony. Usher was the special guest and inspired students to let their passions lead them through life. It will be exciting to see who delivers the message to the Scholastic Winners this year!
Ever since I found out about Kenzie winning a National Silver Medal for the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, I have been thinking about what this honor actually means. For those of you not aware of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program, it is in the 91st year of celebrating young artists and writers from across the Nation. In oder to be considered for the National competition, a student had to have received a Gold Key at the regional level. Their work is then juried in New York City by a panel of professionals and notification is sent back to students. The winners of National Awards are among the top 1% of ALL work submitted to the program.

This is a process that begins in the Fall and flows all the way through to the pinnacle meeting of the award winners in June with workshops, tours, and the celebration at Carnegie Hall. This is the third time in Byron Center Public Schools' history that a student has made it to Nationals.

In addition to the accolades, the winners of National Scholastic Awards are now a part of quite a group of creatives that have gone on to do AMAZING things after winning their Scholastic Medals as students in the classroom. To be a National Medalist means you are in the same club as Truman Capote, Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Steven King, and more!

I cannot stress enough how much of an honor this is and how proud I am of my student for making it to this point. If you want to help Kenzie get to Carnegie Hall so she can experience what it really means, please check out her Go Fund Me campaign and donate whatever you can. If you are interested in the itinerary and events that go along with the Awards weekend, please click on the document below.

If you would like to find out how you can help or sponsor this effort, feel free to email me for additional information here.

Today, through the help of an ArtPrize Education Travel Grant, I was able to take students to downtown Grand Rapids and view some of the most exciting works of art as a part of the 4th annual Art Competition. In addition to seeing great works of art that pushed our minds to seeing the world in a new way, students also got a chance to participate in the Education Day Chair Camp where they designed and created chairs as well as participated in a collaborative sculpture that will be on display near the UICA.

As you can see from our video, it was a great time. We were able to check out many of the top 25 picks for the competition that was not announced until later today. I hope students are able to go back and check out more of the sites while this event continues for the next couple of weeks. And remember, if you take a picture and email me or bring in a print, you will recieve 5 points of extra credit that can be applied either this or next semester!

As we get ready for a new school year, I want to make sure students and parents are aware of our stART (study art) abroad program that is organizing the England/France 2013 trip. You can read more about the trip and the program here.

There is an informational meeting on Wednesday, September 12th at 6:30p.m. in the Art classroom where parents and students can get details about the trip. There will be a drawing for a $200 discount to one participant who signs up for this trip on or before September 12th. Our group will also receive an additional excursion (to Windsor Castle or Versailles) added to our trip if at least three participants are enrolled by the deadline of September 19th.

If you have questions or concerns about the trip, please feel free to email me: jcampbell@bcpsk12.net - I know this is going to be a great learning experience for students and I am very excited to lead this stART abroad effort!

Whenever I am visiting a new city, I always try and check out their art museum. I had the chance to visit the Denver Art Museum while in Colorado last week. When we first approached the building, I knew I was going to be in for a treat. The severe angles and large public art pieces made for a visually interesting piece of architecture on the outside. On the inside, the varying wall angles made for a different kind of display space. Who says walls have to be perpendicular to the floor anyway?

My favorite part of any Art Museum is the contemporary wing. This place was no different. From Jim Dine to Sandy Skoglund, it was really a treat to be in such an interesting building filled with artists I knew and some that I am interested in knowing more about.

One artist that really captured my attention was Tony Oursler. His piece Zero, shown below, was in a dark corner of the contemporary wing. It was bizarre to see this little doll in a suitcase, having a conversation with itself. It made my husband and I smile, laugh, and question. It did what art is supposed to do, change the way you look and think about things.
Have you been to any good museums this summer? What new artists have made you rethink art? Please share any interesting art experiences as we start getting geared up for another school year!

I had the opportunity to travel to Paris last week with EFtours; the trip was training for the England/France student trip I will be leading with them next year.

It was a fantastic time and a large part of that was due to the professionalism and extensive content learned while being guided around Paris by EFtours.

I am so excited for the trip we have planned next summer and cannot wait to take students on it with me. If you are interested in signing up for the trip, please check out our tour link or email me for more information.

This summer has been proving most productive. In addition to starting it out with the digital arts camp featured in earlier posts, I have also done a bunch of sewing in preparation for selling items at Byron Days. All items sold will help send students on our 2013 England and France trip. I taught myself how to sew last summer (with the help of some great books and youtube videos) and the result is many purses and pouches like the one shown above.

There is still time to sign up for our 2013 trip. You can find out registration information here: http://www.eftours.com/preview-tour.aspx?pt=CA-1175459
