In addition to finishing out this piece, we were also thrilled to begin the transformation of the space outside of my classroom. This transformation of the smART (sit.meet.ART!) space will be completed once we get our framed art on the walls, which should take place in the next week or two. Students already got a chance to get in the furniture and use it to foster their learning and collaborate with each other.
The finished sign for the space outside of my classroom has been completed! 8th grade students and those in my after school art class did an amazing job collaborating and contributing to this triptych by making their mark. I hope to do many more paintings like this with my students for other areas in our school.

I am completely floored with the results from the first two days in the Art class with this new group of students! 8th grade students and my after school class has done an outstanding job of working together to create the colorful collaborative painting pictured above. 7th grade students completed their bowls for our Empty Bowls event and some even brought in their donations to secure their own bowl for the event. I am so excited with the progress in just two days of class… I cannot wait to see what else comes out of these classes as we progress through the term! 8th grade students started out the term with collaborative painting. Students worked collaboratively to create circles on paper and canvases that will eventually end up as the sign for our hallway. Students will continue to fill the space tomorrow as well as get started on the lettering for their portfolios. 7th grade students worked on bowls for Empty Bowls. It was a great way to celebrating doing something for others and it is always fun to work with clay on the first day of art class!
Students finished out the term with their final exams this week. In addition to taking a 20 question test over the materials, artists, and methods learned over the last 18 weeks, students were challenged to create a composition that explored what they had learned over the term. It is interesting to see how students compose their final compositions and which things they decide to highlight from what they have learned over the term. It is also fun to see the amount of growth students have demonstrated from the beginning of the semester to now. It was a great semester in the art classroom! We have published over 2200 pieces of art on our Artsonia gallery and have had students selected for numerous awards programs - some of the best results from our program, ever! I am sad to see this group go, but I am really excited to teach the next group of students. We have a lot left to do before the end of the school year and it is going to begin with making art from the start - get ready for some clay and paint on day one, kids! Before we left for Winter Break, students learned about the concept of perspective and spent some time in the hallways to see that concept in action. 7th grade students used 1-point perspective, while 8th graders used 2-point. It was neat to see the variance in outcomes based on where students decided to sit out in the hall. You can see the full gallery here. In addition to seeing how space can be shown using perspective, 7th grade students created some space-like images with a little help from my friend and fellow art teacher,Ian Sands. If you are interested in making images like those shown below, check out the video Mr. Sands created that goes through the process. Students also had a chance to take their perspective drawings skills and adapt them to a new situation where they created a 3D name like the examples below.
BCPS student work is on display at the Kent Intermediate School District for the month of January. Work from grades k-12 are represented in a variety of media and covering a vast array of subjects. There will be additional shows across the Grand Rapids area this month as we also prepare for the Scholastic show this month at Kendall College of Art and Design as well as the MAEA Region 9 show at the GRAM in February. I am incredibly proud of our students and their participation in showcasing their talents outside of our school. Our first day back to school for 2014 has been postponed due to incredible weather that hopefully has everyone huddled in their homes and out of harm's way! To get in the spirit of the snow day, below are some snow-inspired Art from Mrs. Allan's class that we made before break! Enjoy! If you are planning to go outside - don't forget your mittens! |
