These past two weeks have been a blur as we have finished up multiple projects, gone on a field trip, made more progress on our ArtPrize piece, and planning our big Art show. I can only assume the rest of the year is going to fly by like this as we get closer and closer to exams and the BIG celebration in New York City for Scholastic!

Objects Complete

Last week, students finished up their objects projects and posted the results on Artsonia. It was fun to see how they interpreted the assignment and even better was that many of them tried new media in new ways because they could not use materials they had used before.

For the past four years at least one of our National Scholastic Medalists' works have been a result of this prompt. I think the main reason for this is that when you are forced to go outside of your comfort zone with new media, you are more willing to try creative risks you might have otherwise avoided.

Here are some examples of the creative risks students came up with for this assignment:
Picture
Avery: For this project I created a bracelet made of many different materials. By using wire, magazine clippings, and clay I was able to compose a decorative wrist piece. This bracelet connects to the project theme because jewelry is often used as family heirlooms and can be very sentimental. I also based my artwork after Mitchell Feinburg's work because he uses ordinary objects and hides a deeper meaning within them. This bracelet has many hidden meanings such as, diversity, awareness, and recycling. By creating this artwork I hoped to show that even small objects can make a difference or impact people's lives.
Picture
Chelsea: For the projects “Objects” I chose to do a tray of sushi because it is one of my favorite foods. The sushi rolls are made out of felt and wool to add texture to make them look real. The tray is made out of clay and it has flower designs to make it look more realistic. My artwork relates to Mitchell Feinberg because I used a 3D material and made a piece of food. Mitchell also had art focused on food. I liked doing this art project because I got to work with new materials.
Picture
Gabby: For this project I chose to choose an object that means something to me that was given to me from my grandma. In order to execute this I chose to block print to put an emphasis on the necklace and my grandma passing it down to me. This piece relates to both Jim Dine's robe piece because of all the different lines making up the art and also Mitchell Feinberg's piece where he imprinted bags and other objects into flower just like with what you do when block printing.
Picture
Aron: I took some paper and put it in a plastic mask face thing. Then I drowned it in glue, and after a few days of waiting I got a mask. After that I took a piece of paper, painted it red, cut it into shapes, took a reflective sheet, cut some shapes, and glued it together with the red paper. After that I glued it all together, after hole punching spaces to put yarn, so that the mask would be wearable. I believe this artwork is sort of like Audrey Flack because she uses a lot of color in her work, and I believe that this mask uses color.
Picture
Olivia: For this artwork I created my own scratch art paper and scratched out my glasses onto it. To do this I used oil pastel and drew my image out with that. Then I painted black tempera paint over this and because water and oil resist I was able to scratch off the the paint. Now you can see the image of my glasses with scratched designs. This artwork relates to the theme of objects because it shows an object but in a fun way. My piece relates to the works of Wayne Thiebaud who draws lots of objects but in simple ways that interest you.
Picture
Madeline: I like to make things that is out of the box, not just a typical painting, even though those can still be powerful. Gumball machines are in lots of stores and it seems like they are never empty, yet many people get them. I chose this material because it helps convey the message that every quarter you leave behind for the gumball, helps the store that it is in. Like Mitchell Feinberg my art shows things that get left behind but, in his picture of cigarettes that shoes how they effect the earth. In my artwork the quarters help the earth, so in a way they have the same idea of things getting left behind.
Picture
Caden:I used block printing for the first time. This technique was good for making the object pop out at the viewer. I carved out a block and applied paint to it. Then I put the painted block to a piece of paper. I used the brayer to apply an equal amount of force to get all the paint from the block, onto the paper I think my art relates to Audrey Flacks art because I used a lot of color in my art piece. Audrey used lots of color in all of her art pieces too. Each color used in this piece of art makes the object visible in a different way.

Issues

Picture
After students turned in their objects projects, we focused on the theme of Issues. Students looked at Wordless News by Maria Fabrizio as inspiration before doing some research and creating works that went into a topic or issue they thought was important to highlight with art. This was a very quick project, so students were limited to 2D media. We also got to use the iPad cart with new apps we received thanks to a newly funded DonorsChoose.org project! This has been a great resource in our classroom so far and I am so excited to utilize it even more next year!

Here are some of the results:
Picture
Jeffery: This work is about being stressed out about school and everything you have to do.
Picture
Allison: The inspiration for this piece was the world issue fracking. Fracking is the act of forcing a high concentration of gasses and chemicals into the earth to make it crack open to get to natural gasses and oils. The act of fracking causes an immense amount of damage in habitats and the earth in general. It was also inspired by my English class where I read a book talking about the issue. This images was aquired for PBS LearningMedia teachers and students from Getty Images. Provided by: Science Source.
Picture
Picture
Hannah: I decided to do my issue on anxiety, its something I have dealt with for such a long time now. Many other people deal with anxiety as well,I decided to do photography because it can capture the real meaning and the time.I decided to do my pictures a bit blurry and crazy, because people with anxiety knows how it feels durning an attack.I wanted people to see what it was like.Alot of people are scared to speak up about there anxiety or just don't recognize they have anxiety, but I have a voice and I want people to know there not alone.
Picture
Alex: I chose homelessness as the issue for this project. Homelessness is a problem across the U.S. and people walk by it as if these people don't matter. However, they may have a mental issue or never got the chance to learn education or have enough money to even start for a job. This piece of work can be related to the hardships we learn about in history class and how that has made things increasingly more difficult for people. I was able to really understand this topic by looking at a video on PBS learning media which had a video from 2017 about a student athlete who didn't have a home.

STEAM projects

The past two weeks have been busy in the Art classroom. In STEAM, we go through five units (one for each letter of STEAM) that have two parts: a "Have to" and "Can do." "Have to" projects are projects I direct students through that connect with the letter of focus for the unit and "Can do" projects are student developed. Students completed their "Can do" projects earlier this week and uploaded them to Artsonia.

t was fun to see students work through a variety of solutions. To help them brainstorm, I directed them to the "Hands-on Projects" section of our online subscription to Scholastic Art Magazine. This helped many students gather ideas and take bits and pieces to make their own project.

It was so much fun to see students develop their own ideas and implement techniques from their "Have to" videos that they shared the week before. It was even more fun to be able to make additional artist connections to students' works and help them develop the creative courage to take bigger risks in their own art.
Picture
Sophia: The artist that inspired me to do this artwork was Robert Rauschenberg. He does colorful printmaking and layers the things he prints on top of each other. For my artwork I did 2 different block prints of Paige in black. Then I took two different pieces of paper and put colorful mono prints on it, and did a collage background. Lastly, I printed the faces onto the collage background and put frames around them.
Picture
Evie: For my project of choice, I decided to try felting again. I tried to do something similar to this last year, but I ended up with far less details, the work being smaller, and just lower quality art. Revisiting this, I had more materials and more time to work on this, which helped me make it far better from last time. The art work also has more personal meaning behind it which made me more passionate to complete it, something that makes my work far better than when I'm just doing it for a grade. I got to use buttons (which I forgot last time) and I made two (which I wanted to do last time) instead of one. While some parts were more rushed and look not as good, I feel like I did a lot better and I'd love to keep working on my felting skills.
Picture
Jenna: For this project i did mono printing and cut the prints in to shapes and glued them down. The spots that didn't have a shape i used a stencil and a pencil to fill it in.
Picture
Khiem: One of the thing that I learn through out this steam years is a mood board. So I organize my past art with some changes in them into a mood board because I think it would be a good way to end the marking period, is to include most of my art in to one with some extra idea or idea that I have before I created my final art. So to round it all up I use the mood board design to organize my art or sketch that I have over the year to remember what I accomplish.
Picture
Marie: In this piece of work I was inspired by artist Tom Friedman in Scholastic Art Magazine. Friedman developed a piece of artwork made from corners of cereal boxes. In his work, he put all of the geometrical triangles together to create a cereal box sculpture. With my own work I used the idea of 3 dimensional triangles formed together in order to create larger piece of work. But instead I used paper folding and origami techniques, as well as mono printing and mixed media ideas.
Picture
Ashtyn: For this project I made a wire hand, because in STEAM we are on the art can do and Mrs. Campbell said that we can do what ever we want as long as it is art related. I made a wire hand because I have never used wire before and thought it would be interesting to try out, and it was.
Students also worked on their Math "Have to" projects this week with a look at radial symmetry. We did this in a variety of ways: first we worked on making buttons, then we made chalk art outside, and finally worked on digital works. This lesson was adapted from Liquitex and I will also be sharing this on Instagram in hopes of winning a $1500 contest I found out about at NAEA in Seattle. Wish us luck!

Meijer Gardens Field Trip

Picture
For the past ten years, I have been able to bring students to the Frederick Meijer Gardens and Sculpture park. It is one of my favorite parts of Spring and we could not have had better weather for our trip!

Students were led on a tour of the Japanese Gardens (which is a new addition to the park) by docents and learned a lot of information about how they created this part of the park. They were also in the process of installing a new exhibit with cranes that lowered sculptures into place, which was exciting to see in action.

Getting Ready for Arts a la Mode

This week is going to be another action-packed one! We are so excited about Tuesday and hope to have a great turn out for the events planned and look forward to sharing the results in our next post!

Show and Tell

Picture
This week in STEAM class, students moved on to their Art "Have to" project where they were asked to team up and work on videos that explained how to use a variety of materials. We were even able to use our newest DonorsChoose.org funded project with pop-up green screens for this assignment. My hope for this project was to create a pool of videos I can post for other students to use in our classroom (which will be so great for kids who need reminders, are absent, or joining our class mid-way through the term).

In addition to demonstrating use of material, they also needed to show where to find them, care, and an artist who uses it in their own work.

Here are a few of them:

Working With New Materials

Picture
Students worked on their project that centered on the theme of Objects, Artifacts, and Things You Leave Behind. One of the challenges of this assignment was that students were required to use media they had yet to implement in a project so far this semester. By requiring them to go beyond their comfort zone, students turned to a variety of alternative methods which is resulting in so many exciting outcomes.

For the past four years, a National Scholastic Medal has yielded from this prompt. My guess is that because I am requesting/requiring students to try something new in their art making, they are taking bigger risks and being a little more bold with their creative expression. I also think they are more than half way through the curriculum in the class at this point, so they are more open to experimenting with ideas and have seen so many examples of other artists making bold choices with big rewards to show for it.

Regardless of the reason, I am excited to see students trying new ideas and get excited about the work they are doing in class. Even better to see is the resilient nature in their approach to the process and pushing through blocks by finding alternative routes or improvising along the way. The finished works will be posted on Artsonia by the start of next week.

One interesting outcome in one of my 7th grade classes was the collaboration you see below. One student created the pencil and sharpener and two more wanted to join in on the oversized fun by making the notebook and eraser. Seeing students view other students as artists and partners in the creative process is what I am always striving for in my classroom, so this was a real delight to see. Anytime you get kids excited about what others are doing and then want to make more art because of it, is a win.

Connecting to Careers

One of my favorite things when I attend a conference like the National Art Education Association gathering is connecting with professionals in my field and those who have benefited from strong backgrounds in Art Education. It is awesome to connect with colleges and universities that offer teachers great resources to share with students who are thinking they would like a creative career in the Arts.

I was able to add to my collection of informative posters this year by hanging up two I have collected from multiple conferences by Ringling College. As soon as I put them up, students we a buzz with the companies where graduates of SO many varieties of Arts-focused areas worked. They were especially interested in Epic Games (which is the maker of the very popular "Fornite"). I am excited to see my students excited and thinking about how they can turn something they find enjoyment in doing into a career they can make a living doing.

Students love these @RinglingCollege posters I got from @NAEA #artsed #dowhatyoulove #startswithart #k12ArtChat pic.twitter.com/L7SNiFLvig

ArtPrize Progress

Picture
We are continuing to work on our ArtPrize piece. This week was all about sealing the mirrored paper and getting more portraits created on the bottle caps. Next week, we hope to have all of the sealing complete for our panels and begin to focus on placement of the caps. The goal is to have this ready for our May 22nd Arts a la Mode Empty Bowls/Fine Arts Night at BCWMS. We also hope to have a venue secured so our work can compete for the Youth Collaboration Award! If you are interested in learning more about that, you can visit our ArtPrize page.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!

Picture
This week is National Teacher Appreciation Week! Although I appreciate the week of appreciation that is to come, I would feel even more appreciated if we have a good turn out for our students and community at our annual Arts a la Mode Empty Bowls/Fine Arts Night on May 22nd.

If you are are student who would like to volunteer, visit this form. If you are a parent interested in volunteering, visit thisform. We are getting really close to this year's event and I am pretty excited about it and hope to see a great turn out for the evening filled with celebrating the Arts.

Thanksgiving Week

Picture
Because Thanksgiving week was only a two day school week, I decided to take a break from the weekly post and push the last two weeks together. The two days we spend together before break were filled with glazing bowls for our spring Empty Bowls event as well as critiquing our own work and prepping pieces for show at both The Van Singel Fine Arts Center for the month of December and at Barnes and Noble for our school Book Fair next weekend.
Picture
When selecting which works they would like to have considered for show, I have students sort their portfolios through a GAP process (make a good pile, an average pile, and a poor pile). Once done, they pick the best of the good and the worst of the poor to compare and contrast with a Venn Diagram.

Afterwards, students do a gallery walk to see what others considered to their their best and worst works and discuss whether or not it was easy to tell the difference. This is a great introduction to personal aesthetic and how we view pieces not only based on how they look, but the experience we have with them.
I like to travel, but this year I stayed close to home for the holidays. I did, however, make sure to go to The Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture park and view their awesome holiday displays. I cannot wait to share these little houses and architectural pieces from above with students in the spring when we create our own models for a STEAM collaboration.

Finished Challenge 3

We have had a really productive round of projects for this past challenge. Students were forced to think beyond their comfort zones and discover new talents as they examined the concept of the things in our lives and the objects we interact with on a daily basis.

In this challenge, students were asked to use a material they had yet to explore. The results were so diverse and exciting to see. Some students used tools for the first time to explore felting. Others explored clay, photography, making their own scratch art paper, and more tools to showcase their solutions to the challenge. It was impressive to see what they were able to create and a joy to see them develop new talents, as one student described in her artist statement below.
Picture
Cam: This is my art I did for project 3. I chose to use clay as a material because clay can sometimes be a challenge and I was willing to take on the challenge to create this hot dog in a bun with all of its ingredients. This connects with project theme 3 because it is an object. One artist that I used as a reference for this art was Janet Fish. I used Janet Fish as a reference because I was making food in my art and she also makes food.
Picture
Lindsey: In this artwork, I decided to use the materials that I chose because I thought that making interesting cut outs on these birds would look good against a silver background. The materials that I used help me to communicate my ideas because I tried to use a lot of vibrant colors in the birds so that they would stand out against the background. This artwork relates to the theme because these birds are objects and something that I left in the past because when I was younger my grandpa and I would always fill up his bird feeders in his backyard, and we don't do it anymore. My artwork is similar to Wayne Thiebaud's work because he makes his artwork of different images of the same thing, which is similar to mine.
Picture
Tara: I LOVED making this art piece and I would gladly do it again! It was amazing to figure out I had talent in felting. If I can do this again, I'm gonna make ALL of my animals.
Picture
Emmie: I was inspired by Wayne Thiebaud and his image of the rows of cakes. The scratch art makes the desserts look inverted and like those neon signs on buildings at night.
Picture
Anna: I used photography and things that are left behind in my life to portrait my ideas. I used these techniques and materials because a photo can say much more than a drawing because it is in real life. I used the things that are left behind idea because I was really inspired by Audrey Flack so I wanted to use that concept in my art project. Audrey Flack shows how things are left behind because she paints cluttered areas to show this.
Picture
Zoe: For this project, a lot of people did physical objects that you leave behind, but I wanted to do something that you mentally leave behind. So, I chose memories. I took watercolor paper and splattered paint on it, creating the pattern. I used blue because blue represents sadness. Next, I tore up the paper, layered it into a face mold, and glued it all together. For the hair, I printed out my memories and then cut them out. I took tape and placed it over the cut outs. Then, I ran water over the tape, the paper rolled off but the text stayed. I layered the hair on top of the head. I used Do Ho Suh as an inspiration because he made a sculpture with deeper meaning in it, and that's what I did as well. Overall, I enjoyed this challenge even though it took me a while to make.

Feeling Thankful

Picture
I am so thankful for so many things this year and these past two weeks are a great example of why. I want to thank everyone who helped us reach our goal for our latest DonorsChoose project! We were able to get it funded thanks to matching funds from the Carnegie Corporation as well as those who gave during Giving Tuesday! It was awesome to see that project receive support knowing it will be a super engaging activity at our upcoming Fine Arts Night. I am also so thankful and proud of my students who have worked hard this year to enter competitions, showcase their work in shows, and take risks with their work to discover new gifts and talents.

It is going to be a busy push to the end of the semester and I look forward to seeing where students go next with their work ahead!

#WIP

Picture
Students worked on a new challenge this week that asked them to consider the items we value and those we do not. In doing so, they also were tasked with using media or materials that they have yet to use in their work. In addition to viewing artists' works that focus on objects and items as their subject, students were introduced to the idea of repurposing materials that are not usually thought of when making art or using materials they have yet to try this semester.

In the middle of the week, I demonstrated felting and used the wonderful resources of Cassie Stephens to my students. Many decided to try their hand at it (as you can see in the images below).
This project has been one of my favorites for years. It has also been pretty successful in yielding unique pieces that have done well in competition. I am excited to see where students end up with these works and which we might be able to save for next year's competition cycle.

Class Banner

Picture
After School Art students have been hard at work making the banner to represent their class that will hang with the others in the cafetorium. After months of sifting through ideas, plans, and lots of cutting and arranging, students started to finalize their work by actually putting the pieces together. The hope and goal is to have this complete and ready for display by our May 23rd event, Arts a la Mode!

More than objects

5/2/2016

Last week, students spent their time working with objects. They used the theme "Objects, Artifacts, and Things You Leave Behind" to explore media and ways to use symbols to represent a whole host of ideas. It was fun to see students go outside of their comfort zone and try new ways of working (one of the criteria was that they were not allowed to use a material previously used).

The results were both exciting and insightful. You can view some of the highlights below.
Picture
My T.: For my art work I used water color with salt, regular paint, and made origami swans/birds. Some techniques i used was when I painted water color on my paper was that I put salt on it to add more detail to make it look more in the daylight time. Art can show the concept of the theme because the artist Mitchell Feinberg uses objects and and things you leave behind in the theme. This artist uses this because in one of their artwork they had cigarettes in it and that is an object you leave behind because once you are done with it you throw it away and don't use it again. In another artwork of theirs they had pills in it and that is an object you use that is also part of the theme.
Picture
Samantha K.: For this art piece I used the option of creating your own scratch paper. I drew the actual picture on the original paper with oil pastels and once I was done with that I added paint to the surface of my oil pastel picture. Then I used different designs like circles, crosshatching, and just different lines to make patterns as I scratched of the paint. This picture follows the theme because the two clocks are the times of birth that my brother and I were born at, the water running down off the clocks resemble the tears that were shed during that moment of birth for me and my brother. I was inspired by Mitchell Feinberg because my brothers name is mitchell and I was also inspired by the clocks that he used in two of his pictures. That is my artwork and how I made it.
Picture
Matt M.: For this project I chose to use paper golden venture origami to create this American flag. I chose to use this material because I thought it was a really cool thing to make stuff with and we also were not able to use materials that we used in prior projects which left me with little options. I chose to make an American flag out of this because our baseball chose to honor fallen soldiers\police officers so our country has a totally new meaning to me and means a lot. This artwork can show the artists that we studied as well because all the artists used simple objects to make their art and made things with meaning to them or to other people as well. This can show the artist Jim Dine because Jim also chose to use very simple objects to make his unique pieces of artwork like I did in my project.
Picture
Sydney C.: The Bubble Gum Movement piece that I have made really fits the project theme, Objects, Artifacts, and Things You Leave Behind because of the materials I have used. Using gum wrappers symbolizes how many just throw away gum wrappers and leave them behind when I decided to change that and make it into a really awesome piece. Then I realized that I had to use a different material and decided that print making was the way to go. Print making is a still life that I can create into my own using a block print. First I took a side shot of my face and then I put into photoshop and traced it on a piece of paper. Then, I rubbed the trace onto the block and then carved it out using the carving tools. I then got inspiration from Andy Warhol to use pop art colors and add the word pop onto the block print. I wanted this piece to be still life and not 3 dimensional. This piece was inspired by Andy Warhol and the idea of leaving bubble gum wrappers behind.
Picture
Picture
Ella P.: My donut hat that I made for this project show how you can take anting you want and make it into something extraordinary. What I did was take socks and turned them into a donut. I used felt and beads to create frosting and springs to decorate the donuts. Hopefully my artwork and inspire other people to make ordinary object into something cool.

Why not?

Picture
One of the best things to have happened as a result of opening up my classroom through the pursuit of exploring themes, is how many times I say, "Why not."

Want to try printmaking with a tire? Why not.

Want to make a plaster hand pedestal? Why not.

Want to make a hat of cloth donuts? Why not.

Want to have an impromptu photoshoot with a tiny turtle? Why not.
Picture
My hope is that in embracing the "why not" aspect of my classroom, students will start to break down the barriers that prevent them from creating innovative pieces and just making "good" art. I want my classroom to act as a space to try new things, explore ideas, and learn from both success and failure.

I also want it to be a place that allows work to be shared with a wider audience. Thanks again to all who voted for Jewel as artist of the week on Artsonia! We are excited to celebrate the recognition and also use the Blick gift cards for new art supplies!

Working with Objects

My is working with origami for her collage.
Students are well on their way to finished works as they select materials and enact plans charted at the end of last week. Because we are focusing on objects, artifacts, and things left behind, solutions for this challenge are more divergent than in past projects. It could also be due to the fact that one of the constraints of the assignment is using a material that they had not yet used.

It has been a lot of fun seeing the progress being made and I am excited to see what becomes of these works as they finish up next week.

More Things and Other Happenings

Students are almost complete with uploading their work to Artsonia from the last project. Here are some more pieces from students from this week.
Picture
Ella: My piece is made from pen, and wire. It came as a difficult art work to make, it was a struggle at first with many hard collaborations we went threw. But in the end I would take the head or cap of the pen and the bottom, and would take one of them and wrap in with wire, and wrap one piece at a time. But after lots of try I finally got good at it, and it started clicking. I used pens for this piece for my lost idem, because if you are me, you use a lot of pens and pencils. But my art is not only that, it is a necklace. I had gotten a idea, or something of the sorts from the artist Mr. Wayne Thiebaud he has uses very feminine, so he persuaded me to make jewelry, so i made a necklace that may be different from others. But its my own master piece.
Picture
Ethan: This is a picture of a house on a scenic plot of land, this is inspired from multiple techniques of graphite drawing. This piece puts great emphasis on the horizon, and orthogonal lines. The theme of this piece is Objects Artifacts, and Things left behind, this theme is represented mainly by the fact that the house is all alone, with multiple largely grown trees, and mountains.
Picture
Grant: I made this cake out of paint plaster, and foam on the inside. I chose the foam as a rough shape of what it was going to be like then, I covered it in plaster. When the plaster dried, I painted it.
Picture
Reagan: I made this artwork for this project because she is leaving behind the real world. The materials I used is, a drypoint print template, three picture from a history book and a steal point stylus. I made this kind of like the Artist Wayne Thiebaud.
Picture
Lily: In my photoshop piece, I decided to make a collage of different potato chips that I have designed myself. To keep a hint of texture, I used the quick selection tool to select the area with only the logo so I could keep the logo identical for every bag I created. Plus, I attempted to keep the idea of unity in mind and make sure their was a lot of variety in the space. The artist, Jim Dine does a great job at keeping the theme of objects and things left behind included in his piece. For example, he has a couple pieces where he uses different hammers in different colors and sizes.
In addition to finishing up this project, students got started on their next theme: We've Got Issues. Students brainstormed ideas around issues they would like to create work about before using PBS LearningMedia to inform their work. Student choices ranged in a variety of avenues from civil rights to animal cruelty to sports injuries to the recent attacks in Paris.

After settling on ideas and doing some research, students sketched out ideas and worked in table groups to pitch ideas and get feedback. It was fun to see conversations that resulted as students asked clarifying questions about the work and gave suggestions to make it stronger. Most students finished up their preliminary sketches today and will complete their work next week.
Picture
Students shared ideas and gave feedback through a critique process before conferencing with me and starting their final piece.
Picture
To finish out this week, the BCPS Visual Arts department worked together to create our Winter Show exhibit at the Van Singel Fine Arts Center. We will have our Artist Reception on Monday and I am very proud of the selection of work and am excited for many of those works who will proceed to compete at the Scholastic Art Awards later this month.

Working with Things

12/1/2015

Today was the last official work day for the current theme of Objects, Artifacts, and Things You Leave Behind. It has been a delight to see the array of works that have been passing through our online gallery as students complete, photograph, and upload their work to Artsonia.

Students really pushed themselves this time because they were asked to use a material they had yet to create with. This limitation opened up a slew of new opportunities for students and here are some of the highlights:

Alexis: In my artwork, I drew with a picture of a girl looking into a mirror and seeing a monster. I drew this to represent depression. I drew this to show that some people look in the mirror and see something that is a monster and they think they aren't good enough. But that’s not true because everybody is beautiful the way they are. Also, in my art, I drew the monster surrounding the girl as if the monster was a cage. In the background of my art, I drew hands pointing at the girl and I drew lips that are calling the girl names. If you look closely at the girl, you can see that she has no torso but instead it’s just a skeleton of a back. I drew this to show body image issues with some girls and I wanted to draw the girl this way to show how girls think they need to be as skinny as a skeleton to be pretty. In my drawing, I drew with drawing pencils, and graphite. I then erased parts of the pencil to give my artwork some highlights. My art relates to the theme because I feel like this is something left behind. I feel like this because this is a huge issue for many girls and I feel that people don't know how big of a problem it is. Also, the mean things that get said to you always stay with you, but these things are the underestimated problems that are left behind in your life, and you just have to let go and don't let the monster in the mirror get into your life.

Ana: In my comic story, I mostly used color pencils, ink pens to bold out the details, color sticks, also some yellow marker to make the necklace more bolded and noticeable. My work does show the art concept of Objects, Artifacts, and Things you leave behind, because my story focuses on this necklace that is lost and left in an unknown place for a decade before being found and returned. It is also a object and artifact because it is a necklace that is forgotten, and this boys find it and gives it to his girlfriend as a gift, but it had treasured by her when she was a young girl, what makes it so valuable and even more dear to her now is that her love was the one who found it and given it back to her. This story also seems to deal with fate like the necklace was meant to be brought back, but only to be brought back by the right person. My story kinda goes along with Mitchell Feinberg's art of the chocolate treat and it projects and deals with time, as my comic in the part where the necklace is lost in the trees to watch as things around it, leave and come only it's missing its owner or someone who has not come to bring it back. In the beginning it project a little girl with her missing teeth, so that indicates she about 8yrs old, when she playing in an open field, then it shows her with another woman going out of the park leaving the necklace behind that had seemed to be dropped. This is where the bird flies into the scene, picks the little necklace up and drops it in a tree where it show of the little blue bird's nest, as the weeks pass for the hatchlings have hatched, too coming of fall and winter, then months then years it has been hung up in the nest. On a faithful the lightning hitting that particular branch that held the necklace for those long years, which soon a boy finally found the necklace after the lightning strike then only to give it back to his girlfriend as a gift. Where this girl was the prior owner, the little girl in the beginning of the story.

Denver: For this particular project I decided to take a picture using my experience as a guide. I used the rule of thirds to make the photo more interesting. I also took the picture in a area were their was two lights one that made a reflection off of the plates and one that lit up the photo. This piece goes with the project because I took just an everyday item and created a piece of art by taking a picture of a broken plate against whole plates. I made a normal household object into something with meaning. This fallows Mitchell Feinberg the most because like me we both use photos to show the story.
Picture
Nick: To make this piece, I used a ton of gummy bears. The 3 triangles are covered in gummy bears, and there's a flashlight shining up them to light them up. The cylinder-like things are also made of gummy bears. I hot glued gummy bears on top of gummy bears to create them. Then I placed a candle in the middle to light them up. I then photographed it in my dark garage. On iPhoto, I edited the picture a little to make the candle lights seem brighter and to take a little of the glare off of the bottom gummy bears on the triangles. My work is similar to that of Janet Fish because of the reflective qualities it has. The gummy bears on the triangles are reflecting the light, which is why you can see them. If they weren't reflecting the light, they'd just be dark and they wouldn't show up. However, my work is also like that of Wayne Thiebaud. That is because both my piece and his have things that are repeated throughout the piece. The gummy bears in my piece are the repeated objects just like how the pieces of cake are repeated in one of his pieces. Finally, my piece is like some of Jim Dine's work because some of his pieces and my piece are both sculptures. Mine is sculpture made out of gummy bears, like his are sculptures made out of tools.

Corrinne: The reason I chose to do this for this project is because I really like photography. I thought that since a camera is an object, and could be an artifact in the future, it would fit in this project great. The camera was an observational drawing from a picture on my computer that I traced over in pen. Then, I decided to add texture and crosshatch the middle with a fine tip Sharpee, a regular pen, and gel pens. Finally, the background is a watercolor of only primary colors, because the colors of gel pens I used on the inside were just those colors too. An artist that inspired me originally was Audrey Flack because her paintings looked like real photos. So, I thought I was going to do a photography project. But, then I realized I could spin it around and draw a camera.
Picture
Sarah: My piece shows the theme of how objects are left behind because in the story, the character named Piccolo has a hat that goes on an adventure to find another hat. This hat ends up finding a girl hat and they fall in love, but their human owners are lonely without their hats so they try to find their hats. In the end, they all find each other and live happily ever after. This is, in a way, like the artist Wayne Thiebaud, who illustrations mostly clothing, such as a hat or shoes.
Picture
Lilly: For my project I decided to make a necklace, because I thought that it was something that not a lot of people do, and I thought that it would be fun. To make the fringe on the necklace, I cut small pieces of brown wire do to size. Then I twisted the pieces of wire and left a loop on the top, so that I could slip it easily on to the black leather. To twist the wire, I just gripped the top with my fingers to create the loop, and then just twisted the wire. After I was done twisting the wire, I just cut of the excess and looped it on to the black leather. To make the necklace be able to be different lengths based on your preference, I made two slip knots so that you could change how far down the necklace goes. Some elements of the art are shape, because the fringe are a different shape than necklaces usually have. Another element is texture, because when you feel the fringe it kind of feels rough but smooth at the same time. Some examples of principles of design are unity, because of how the pieces of fringe look together. One more example of principles of design contrast, because of how the brown and black contrast each other. This piece of art kind of reminds me of Mitchell Feinberg, because in his artwork he uses the same objects, such as shoes, apples, and bullets. In my piece, I used a lot of the twisted wire to represent fringe. Kind of like how Mitchell Feinberg uses many of the same objects in his art.
Picture
Brody: For my art I think I used good texture with the things I took pictures of because you can see what I took pictures of and how the would feel. Also, I think I used a good variety of things I took pictures of because not one of them are really close to one another. One thing that I used for every picture was the camera because it took good pictures of things. Another tool I used was the brightness tool in Artsonia to make my art have more texture. I would compare my art to Jim Dines art because I took pictures of things and put them together to make my name.
Picture
Paige: In this piece of art, I used many different materials, including newspaper and oil pastel. I used the newspaper as the floor of the room, along with a white oil pastel to lightly color over the newspaper. I also used metallic pencils to shade in and color the different objects in the room. In my art, I can show the concept of this theme because it is showing food, drinks, and some other objects that a person left behind at a diner. When looking at the artist Wayne Thiebaud, I can compare my art to his because he had food in one of his art pieces, and he had some drinks in another one of his pieces that must have been left behind from somebody.
Picture
Kasey: Objects can represent many different things that we encounter in life or today's society. In Mitchell Feinberg's art piece that was made with shoe in the shape of a heart. Represents the Boston Marathon Bombing that happened a couple of years ago. Also in Jim Dine's art pieces he has tools that are outlined in black then has shadowing. This represents his life as a kid because his dad was an owner of a workshop.
Picture
Clay: In my artwork, Force Field I have a metal ball made out of wire. That could represent the force field. Then I have a have a person in their that has the colors blue, green, and red. He is hovering inside the force field. How I made him hover was that I poked a hole in both his hands and slit a smaller more bendable wire that I wrapped around one of the sides of the big wire. I did that on each hand. I had a lot of fun making this and I am pretty proud of it.

Much to be Thankful for...

As we finish up the Thanksgiving break, I have a lot to be thankful for this season. I have an awesome group of students this year, with amazing ideas and the guts to give new things a try. I have been given some fantastic opportunities to share ideas with other teachers (with even more on the horizon). And I have a great family who supports me along the way.

This week, before we departed for our long weekend of family and food, students finally glazed their bowls for our 2016 Empty Bowls event. This year we are changing up the event by pushing it later into the Spring and swapping out soup for ice cream. I am excited to get moving on firing these bowls, as students did a nice job of applying glazes and finishing them for the community fundraiser.
Students also worked on their projects before we headed off to enjoy break. This theme, which is "Objects, Artifacts, and Things You Leave Behind." has asked students to consider how we interact with items around us and what we deem as important. Here are some images of the BCWMS artists at work:
