Today was our second day of the semester, since yesterday was snow day. I was really excited to use the computers in class, until first hour rolled around and none of them seemed to connect to the internet. Luckily we had our clay projects, but some of those dried out too much from Monday. So, we had to go with our back up of the back up plan and I was able to show students all kinds of cool things they can do with their Macs.

By 4th hour the internet issue was solved, and those students were able to take the Art Survey, complete the Social Contract, and create really cool graffiti style names. If you were in 1-3 hours, you will want to go to Moodle tonight and get caught up.

Tomorrow, I am looking forward to using the computers again - hopefully glitch-free!

I am really excited about several conferences I am going to present at in the next month about how we run things in the Art Room at West through blended online learning (a combination of traditional teaching with online media). Here is a promo vid that shows a sneak peak of how blended online learning works in our class through the use of Moodle and other resources and how it solves issues teachers face day-to-day.

It was fun to get the kids involved in sharing how they learn with others and I am excited to get the chance to help other teachers bring this method of instruction into their classrooms, too!

Students finished uploading their work onto Moodle today before moving onto glazing their bowls and working on their abstract drawings. I am really enjoying the progress of assignments and demonstration of skill as students not only show me their work, but use their owns words to describe how they feel about it. 7th grade students worked on creating multiple blind contour portraits today before adding their choice of material for color.

Students worked on finishing their drawings today. Although many are still in progress, we should be finished up by tomorrow.

Once they are done, students will take a picture of their work and upload it to Moodle. Students will also write an artist statement reflecting on their work and both the statement and art will be posted on Artsonia.

8th grade students selected their part of the drawing and added more lines and color after cutting it out.

Students not only finished their first drawings in art class today, they also managed to upload the work to Moodle and write their artist statements about their work. You can see the finished modified blind contour drawings and exquisite corpse drawings on our online gallery at Artsonia!

8th grade students are finishing up their monsters today and tomorrow before submitting them onto Moodle. They have used all kinds of embellishments to create these creatures that represent some aspect of their own personality. If you were a monster, what might you look like?

more hallways and clay projects

8th grade students are finishing up the final upload of work onto Moodle before our long weekend for Thanksgiving break.

Tomorrow I will be chaperoning the 8th grade field trip to the Ford Presidential Museum downtown, leaving today the last work day before the break.

If students did not get their Artist Trading Cards done today, they are expected to work on them for homework and turn them into Moodle next Monday.

uploading work

7th grade students worked non-stop today to finish uploading their work from the week onto Moodle. In addition to their hallway drawings, where they used 1-point perspective, they also uploaded their pictures of the clay project featured in past posts.

It is so nice to see the work, all shining and bright, on display in the library for all to admire. I am hoping we will do our second sculpture project when we return from holiday break (but I am still a few panty hose short from making it happen and need some donations).

8th grade students are still working on their hallway drawings and uploading their clay bottles for a grade. They will finish up on Monday and then move onto making Artist Trading Cards for the March international show in Singapore.

Students are using the materials from the DonorsChoose project that was funded through the help of several generous donors!

Images of the cards and more work will be shortly finding a home on our online gallery on Artsonia, so keep a lookout for more!

webquests and more with moodle

7th and 8th grade students logged onto Moodle today to complete various tasks online.

7th grade students used the links to start an Artsonia webquest and 8th grade students used it to view and respond to a presentation that is getting them ready for their next project with clay.

Moodle has become an important tool in the art room to help record and track progress with projects and I look forward to seeing how this new tool will enhance the way students learn and view new information in Art.

social contract

Students used Moodle to create the social contract for our class. A social contract is an agreement between students and their teacher about how we are going to treat each other in the classroom. Students were asked to type the response to these questions: 1. How do you want to be treated by Mrs. Campbell, 2. How do you think Mrs. Campbell wants to be treated by you? 3. How should students treat each other? 4. How should we treat each other when there is conflict?

I took the student responses to those questions and pasted them into wordle to create the word clouds below. Now, I would like for students to vote on which wordle they would like to be printed and posted in the class. Students have until September 14th to vote by leaving a comment to this blog post. Going from left to right, use the number 1, 2, 3, or 4 to cast your vote in a post below.
