Hold the Ketchup, Bring the Bottle

Dear Parents/Friends/Students/Fellow Teachers,

I came across the above image from a post that an Art teacher friend of mine posted yesterday. I currently use a similar system, but they clog all of the time and they have a tendency to explode as a result (maybe you have seen the aftermath of this on students' clothing at some point over the last year).

Although I love putting ketchup on almost everything, there is no way I will be able to go through enough to get the bottles needed to implement this in my classroom for the Fall. If possible, please save and clean empty bottles so that I can upgrade to this system and save your children from exploding paint bottles. I would be in need of 10 bottles total. If you are able to contribute to the cause, please respond to this post. I can start accepting bottles as soon as you are ready to send them my way.

Summer Artsonia Challenge

I am interested in what students are making over the summer and would like to challenge parents and students to post works to their Artsonia accounts before August 22nd (both Jitter's Day and Parent Orientation meetings).

For the past couple of years, I have made the effort to submit student work to the MAEA Region 9 Adjudication. This year is the first time that a student of mine made it into the top 15 for Middle School works in the State of Michigan and can be seen with the other top honorees on the MAEA website. Take a moment and check out the amazing works by the students at Elementary, Middle, and High School that represent the great examples of Art Education across the state of Michigan.

Congratulations to Jazmine for her Photoshop portrait shown above. I am excited to enter more student work into the show this next school year!

STEAMed Awards Semi-Finalist

I am proud to announce that I was selected as a semi-finalist for the 2013 STEAMed Awards! Please click on this link and vote for me until July 19th! In order to enter, teachers who use STEAM in their classrooms could write or create a video entries that explained how they incorporate Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math into their classrooms.

I selected to write an essay that describes how each of the above areas of study are intertwined into the day-to-day activities my students tackle.

I address Science through our work with clay starting on day one as seen in this photo:

How we use technology to do so many things - here is just one of the images students made last year through the use of technology and traditional methods of art making:

We address aspects of Engineering through the field trip we take each year to the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture park where students get to explore how artists work to create large-scale pieces that can withstand hard weather conditions:

And lastly, I explain how we use perspective to explore Mathematic principles when drawing our hallways from observation.

Overall, I am excited to have had the opportunity to share with other teachers the types of learning experiences we involve ourselves in as a part of the WMS Visual Arts Program. I hope to make it as a finalist, but I will need your help in order for that to happen.
