Cubist Inspiration

8th grade examples from Alec, Lauren, and Olivia.
I love it when I stumble across a brilliant idea from a fellow teacher and am able to adapt it to my classroom! This past week, students challenged themselves to think in a different way while they drew both abstractly and realistic within the same project.

We looked at the cubist work of Picasso for this assignment and students then selected their images from magazines before sketching what they saw. I saw this idea from Holly Bess Kincaid, an art teacher from Texas.

I am very thankful to have such great resources from talented teachers across the country and that my students are willing to push themselves to try these new ideas with me!

Dillon1484 Artist of the Week Finalist
Since the first week of school, students have been posting work to our online gallery on Artsonia. Each week, work from around the world is selected as finalists for their weekly online voting competition. This week we have a BCWMS student up for the title for the Photoshop piece he created last week.

Help our class and Dillon win by voting for his work every day starting now!

Students finished uploading their work onto Moodle today before moving onto glazing their bowls and working on their abstract drawings. I am really enjoying the progress of assignments and demonstration of skill as students not only show me their work, but use their owns words to describe how they feel about it. You can check out our latest assignments on our Artsonia gallery.

Warm and Cool Wrap Up

I used the extra lines I made it 3d instead. I really liked this project. It was really fun to paint. It was really fun to make it 3d. I learned that celtic knots came from Ireland. --Artist Statement by Nate S.
7th and 8th grade students finished up their warm and cool projects today. Tomorrow all students will finish uploading their work to Moodle so I can put it on our online gallery.

It is always fun to see the creative ways students make each assignment their own and demonstrate their understanding of a topic. I find it especially helpful when they include artist statements to show me what they learned and thought along the way. Not every project is everyone's favorite, but no matter what, every student is learning something in the process.

I liked drawing it with glue after we drew them blinded. I learned that there are millions of possibilities when it comes to abstract drawing. What surprised me was how cool it turned out in the end. -- Artist Statement by Tanner D.

Today, through the help of an ArtPrize Education Travel Grant, I was able to take students to downtown Grand Rapids and view some of the most exciting works of art as a part of the 4th annual Art Competition. In addition to seeing great works of art that pushed our minds to seeing the world in a new way, students also got a chance to participate in the Education Day Chair Camp where they designed and created chairs as well as participated in a collaborative sculpture that will be on display near the UICA.

As you can see from our video, it was a great time. We were able to check out many of the top 25 picks for the competition that was not announced until later today. I hope students are able to go back and check out more of the sites while this event continues for the next couple of weeks. And remember, if you take a picture and email me or bring in a print, you will recieve 5 points of extra credit that can be applied either this or next semester!

Students worked with warm and cool colors again today as they filled their backgrounds with contrasting colors.

We will be finishing up these projects soon. All they need are some additional details to complete the look.

Students are beginning to work with line and color this week as we discuss the differences between warm and cool color families. Both 7th and 8th grade students will be working with this concept as they fill in the shapes created with lines that both projects deal with.

So, I know that every teacher says they have the best job in the world - but really, I do have THE best job because I know  my students are THE best!

8th grade students finished their Photoshop portraits today. In this assignment,  I gave them the freedom to play with the program to create some kind of image of themselves as the subject. Student projects ranged from placing themselves in far off places to turning themselves into monsters or zombies. Other students, however, used the tool to look within their own emotions and say something personal about themselves.

The above picture (and the close up of it) is an example of just that. The student said he was inspired by an ArtPrize piece he saw in the Grand Rapids Press that made a face out of many different objects and he thought it would be cool to create his face out of many different emotions (which you can see in the closer image). When I looked at it, I was super excited not only because it is a great looking work and interesting concept, but it was something that came completely from the student. This piece is the first piece that has been submitted to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for my classes. I am super excited to see how it does along with the other works we submit.

Here is another piece from a different student that will be submitted to the Awards, too.

8th grade students continued to work in Photoshop today to manipulate pictures of themselves. Tomorrow they will finish up and upload the work to Moodle.

7th grade students worked with line and symmetry today as they start to learn about Celtic knots. Tomorrow they will transfer their designs onto a watercolor paper and add colored pencil and paint that shows their understanding of color.
