Photoshop is always a fun tool to use in my room and I am excited when I see the results. You can check out the full class of work on www.artsonia.com/schools/byron1.
7th grade studens finished their Photoshop collage portraits to help me get to know them better. I love how colorful the images are now that students filled them with their favorite items. I also really enjoyed the artist statements students wrote to accompany their work. The recurring theme from the statements was how much students liked being able to choose what they wanted to put in their faces and how they also enjoyed using computers.

We just finished our second week of school, which was also our first full week of classes. In that period of nine days, students have created clay bowls and imprinted leaves, made collaborative drawings, and worked with digital cameras and programs.
The evidence of our efforts can be seen on our Artsonia online gallery. So far we have 100 works published with more on the way on Monday. I am really excited about the work that is published and the statements students have written to express what they learned. Friends and family can begin to comment on student work and join fan clubs of our artists to help our ranking in participation. We are currently ranked 5 in the state of Michigan. Items with student art can also be purchased to help our program. For each item bought with a BCWMS artwork on it, our class gets a percentage of the funds. We use these extra monies for supplies, artist visits, and field trips. I am so proud of the progress students have made this week. Students are learning new tools to express themselves in new and interesting ways.
I am excited to post their work to Artsonia and would love it if friends and family could comment on their work. Students worked on digital art today in class. Both groups started using Photoshop and learning basic tools as well as layering effects. When surveyed this year, Photoshop came out with the highest percentage of interest level among students. Clay was second.
I am happy that students have been able to experience their top two within the first two weeks of school. 8th grade students turned in their work using Moodle today. After uploading their art and writing a statement that will be posted on our Artsonia gallery, students used Moodle to access their next assignment.
Using Tagxedo, students are creating word clouds to help me get to know them. I love art that also uses text. I have been having a great time with the app WordFoto that does just that! Students worked on finishing their drawings today. Although many are still in progress, we should be finished up by tomorrow.
Once they are done, students will take a picture of their work and upload it to Moodle. Students will also write an artist statement reflecting on their work and both the statement and art will be posted on Artsonia. I am very excited to announce that we will be going to ArtPrize on September 24th, in downtown Grand Rapids. This annual field trip is one of my favorites to start the school year. Students interested in attending can print off the permission slip from this post and turn it in by Friday. I will be able to take between 40-50 students and will select those students during next weekend based on their essay and behavior in class. I am also in need of parent volunteers. If you are interested in helping, please contact me via email. As you can see from the poster for this year, they are using Op Art as inspiration for their logo. We study Op Art in 7th grade after creating our perspective drawings. Below are videos from last year's ArtPrize trip as well as some Op Art pieces from past BCWMS art students. I hope students take advantage of this opportunity to be a part of this great Grand Rapids art event! ArtPrize2011 from Janine Campbell on Vimeo.
After students were finished putting their portfolios together, we moved onto some drawing games that got us up and moving.
7th grade students had a portrait party. They used blind contour drawing methods to observe and draw their peers. The result is very abstract and fluid. The room filled with laughter as soon as they revealed their drawings to each other and themselves. 8th grade students worked on their exquisite corpse drawings again today and selected with one they are interested in modifying. Both groups will continue to work on the drawings Monday by adding color and more lines. Students worked on a variety of things today. From portfolios to Pre-tests, students moved from each activity with ease.
I feel incredibly proud of the group of students I get to teach this year. They have been awesome these first few days and I know we are going to do some amazing things this semester! Students continued to work with their clay projects today. I was able to take 8th grade students outside to select leaves and create imprints.
Students then compared how their impressions were created yesterday and today. It was great to hear students use words like organic and geometric without having already gone over the terms - it feels like summer was just a long weekend. I am very proud of my students work so far and we will finish up our work with clay tomorrow. |
