7th grade students are starting to finish their animations today and upload them to Moodle. Once there, I can access them to share with the class. Tomorrow everyone should be done and we will plan a viewing party later this week. Until then, students have the option to create a variety of things from their Art Projects List (a list of ideas and project starters to help students decide what to do when they are done with a project). The two videos above were created by students using Photoshop (top) and cameras (bottom).

8th grade students worked on their portraits today by taking expressive images of themselves and posterizing them in Photoshop to show 5 values. Tomorrow they will begin to outline those values on transparencies before projecting them onto larger paper for their projects.
This project is one of my favorites to teach because every student gets to select the materials they use for the values. Each time I teach it, I am surprised by the choices students make on what they want to use. I am looking forward to seeing these pictures take shape as students add value to create their self-portrait. So, I know that every teacher says they have the best job in the world - but really, I do have THE best job because I know my students are THE best! 8th grade students finished their Photoshop portraits today. In this assignment, I gave them the freedom to play with the program to create some kind of image of themselves as the subject. Student projects ranged from placing themselves in far off places to turning themselves into monsters or zombies. Other students, however, used the tool to look within their own emotions and say something personal about themselves. The above picture (and the close up of it) is an example of just that. The student said he was inspired by an ArtPrize piece he saw in the Grand Rapids Press that made a face out of many different objects and he thought it would be cool to create his face out of many different emotions (which you can see in the closer image). When I looked at it, I was super excited not only because it is a great looking work and interesting concept, but it was something that came completely from the student. This piece is the first piece that has been submitted to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for my classes. I am super excited to see how it does along with the other works we submit. Here is another piece from a different student that will be submitted to the Awards, too. 7th grade studens finished their Photoshop collage portraits to help me get to know them better. I love how colorful the images are now that students filled them with their favorite items. I also really enjoyed the artist statements students wrote to accompany their work. The recurring theme from the statements was how much students liked being able to choose what they wanted to put in their faces and how they also enjoyed using computers.
Photoshop is always a fun tool to use in my room and I am excited when I see the results. You can check out the full class of work on www.artsonia.com/schools/byron1. I am so proud of the progress students have made this week. Students are learning new tools to express themselves in new and interesting ways.
I am excited to post their work to Artsonia and would love it if friends and family could comment on their work. Students worked on digital art today in class. Both groups started using Photoshop and learning basic tools as well as layering effects. When surveyed this year, Photoshop came out with the highest percentage of interest level among students. Clay was second.
I am happy that students have been able to experience their top two within the first two weeks of school. Below are a few more pictures from Art Camp last week. In addition to learning photography techniques and animation tools, students also used image altering programs like Photoshop and Picture Manager to create colorful and humorous images like those displayed below.
Having an After School Art class allows for time to do some pretty big projects that take multiple people and weeks worth of work to complete. The image above of Mr. Dennett was inspired by Ian Sands, an Art teacher in North Carolina and a project he does with his Art I students. This picture of Mr. Dennett is now on display in the upstairs hall next to his room. You will notice that it is made of 2x2 inch squares the students cut and pasted, working off of an image they manipulated in Photoshop to get the color and pixels into the image. This was a fun process that the students look forward to replicating; who will be next? You will have to wait and see... 8th grade students finished up their Photoshop projects today and turned them into Moodle. This project was one where they were able to choose what they wanted to create from a list of ideas and tutorials in this LiveBinder.
Students came up with an array of interesting images that will soon be posted on our online gallery at Artsonia and submitted as a part of the Surrealistic Me project from the Student Creative. I am getting to know by 7th grade students more this week through this project. Students filled their profiles in Photoshop with collages images of the things that best represent them. They learned the basics with photo manipulation and digital collages through this process and the results and colorful and lively! You can see more on our Artsonia online gallery!
