Today was the big announcement for the ArtPrize top ten and the ten winners selected for the first ever ArtStart Online Youth Competition. As you have read in previous posts, students in my class have been working hard and creating works inspired by ArtPrize for this competition. Today they announced the winners and I am proud that one of my students was among them! Congrats to Emma and her work entitled "Blaze" for receiving recognition at today's event. Here is Emma fast at work at the beginning of this drawing:

This week has been a whirlwind! Students have been drawing, painting, sculpting, entering competitions, and working out their Photoshop skills! It has been amazing to see and be a part of and here a a few highlights from the week: 1. ArtPrize EntriesStudents worked on their ArtPrize ArtStart online Youth competition entries this week. It was really fun to see them come up with so many different ideas inspired by what they saw art ArtPrize this year. You can view more on our online gallery at www.artsonia.com/schools/byron1. We will find out the winners of this first ever youth competition this weekend - good luck to all who took the plunge and entered! 1. Photoshop PhridayPhotoshop is an amazing tool. I am very fortunate that my students all get the opportunity to use this tool on their computers whenever they want. As a 1:1 school, students have access to their MacBooks daily and students in Art have Photoshop installed on their machines. I decided to try something new this year to replace the common sketchbook assignment and that was Photoshop Phriday. The goal was that we would start a Photoshop work on the first Friday of the month and throughout the month use various tools and acquired skills to add elements of what we were making in class to it until we turned it in by the end of the last Friday of the month. You can see the full array of examples on our gallery. 3. Rocking Artsonia! Our classroom has been an active member of Artsonia since 2007. It has been through various updates and changes over the years, but the new use of Art Classroom mode has been revolutionary for both me and my students in our classroom! Instead of taking individual pictures myself and uploading their work to the site, students take the pictures and use a class code to upload their projects to the proper page. They edit their images and write corresponding learning statements to help the viewer understand what we were learning in class and how that shows through in their work. The response has been amazing - we are currently ranked #1 in Michigan and have close to 500 works posted in just the first 24 days of school! That is amazing! Please consider leaving a comment for one of our artists and checking out their learning journey as you read their statements that go along with their art. 4. Other amazing work that happened this week: Ever since ArtPrize came to the West Michigan area five years ago, it has transformed the streets of Grand Rapids into an interactive array of Art. In addition to having the opportunity seeing great (and some not so great) pieces through the Artcation days, students now have the opportunity to create work that will then be judged by artists and others in the ArtStart Online Youth Competition. Above are some images of students from my After School Art class working on their entries (all inspired by at least 3 elements from ArtPrize). The rules are outlined on this website and the due date for participation is next week. I am really excited to see how the works turn out from my students and the winners that will be announced when they also announce the top 10 finalists for this year's main competition. If you do not get a chance to go downtown, but are looking for some inspiration, you can check out this awesome video that overviews just a sample of what ArtPrize is like in Grand Rapids: ArtPrize 2013 from ArtPrize on Vimeo. While I am preparing for students to arrive in my classroom within the next few weeks, I wanted to give everyone a heads-up on this really cool opportunity offered duringArtPrize this year: I am planning to take students to ArtPrize in September (a specific date will be announced tomorrow, along with details on how to get involved). This field trip has been a tradition for the past few years and I am looking forward to offering this opportunity to students again this year. Check out the video of our experience last year: For the past couple of years, I have made the effort to submit student work to the MAEA Region 9 Adjudication. This year is the first time that a student of mine made it into the top 15 for Middle School works in the State of Michigan and can be seen with the other top honorees on the MAEA website. Take a moment and check out the amazing works by the students at Elementary, Middle, and High School that represent the great examples of Art Education across the state of Michigan.
Congratulations to Jazmine for her Photoshop portrait shown above. I am excited to enter more student work into the show this next school year! I am proud to announce that I was selected as a semi-finalist for the 2013 STEAMed Awards! Please click on this link and vote for me until July 19th! In order to enter, teachers who use STEAM in their classrooms could write or create a video entries that explained how they incorporate Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math into their classrooms. I selected to write an essay that describes how each of the above areas of study are intertwined into the day-to-day activities my students tackle. I address Science through our work with clay starting on day one as seen in this photo: How we use technology to do so many things - here is just one of the images students made last year through the use of technology and traditional methods of art making: We address aspects of Engineering through the field trip we take each year to the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture park where students get to explore how artists work to create large-scale pieces that can withstand hard weather conditions: And lastly, I explain how we use perspective to explore Mathematic principles when drawing our hallways from observation. Overall, I am excited to have had the opportunity to share with other teachers the types of learning experiences we involve ourselves in as a part of the WMS Visual Arts Program. I hope to make it as a finalist, but I will need your help in order for that to happen.
Thanks for the help and remember to vote: I am happy to report that our students won two first place and one second place award from the Meijer Great Choices Film Competition! This not only awarded our classroom grant funds to be used to fund awesome Arts experiences, but it also means that the first place videos will be shown at Celebration Cinemas for a special awards ceremony. It is going to be a blast to see the student work come alive on the big screen.
This would not have been possible without the help and support of all of the family, friends, and students who voted daily. Thank you for your help and I look forward to seeing how we fare next year as we enter this competition again! There are multiple tutorials on Moodle that students have used to help them create Art. I would love to see some examples of students teaching their parents the skills we have learned in class. Any students who teach their parent or other important adult or family member in their life a lesson/project we have done in class and can supply pictures of the experience by the end of April will be put in a drawing to win Notecards with their Art on it from Artsonia. Special consideration will be given to students to make a video in iMovie of the process.
Also, remember to vote and help our students win the Meijer Great Choices Film Festival - once per video, per day. Due to weather and road conditions that were left after getting hammered by snow last night, the Scholastic Art Awards were canceled for today. This is the first time since we have been participating that this has ever happened, but I understand putting safety before celebration. I picked up the work today to prepare for another competition, but before I took it down I made sure to take some pictures of the pieces on display. If you want a closer work at the winners, click on this link. Again, I am incredibly proud of the work my students created and look forward to hearing how the American Vision and Gold Key winners do at Nationals!
When coming back from two weeks off, I am always a little nervous if we will be able to get right back at it in the classroom. Without fail, my student consistently come ready and wanting to do their work and anxious for finishing up various projects before our time runs out next week. This is the last full week I will see my first semester students and they are working like crazy to create the best final projects they can.
7th grade students are working on a variety of choices ranging from Video Game Design to producing Videos and using traditional art media to capture the essence of Space. 8th grade students are working on their final informational videos that they will use to help study for their final. I am really proud of this group of students and look forward to meeting my new batch in a couple of weeks. |
