This week has offered a lot of things to unfold as students worked on competitions, community projects, individual works, and class projects. Every year is the best year ever and I always wonder how my students are going to out-do the accomplishments and fun already accomplished. Even though we are only a month into this school year, this year is already becoming the best year ever and sure to blow any other experience I have had in my classroom out of the water.

8th grade students are working through their ideas today as they started to begin their final projects. It was awesome to see how some students evolved their sketches over time and improved as a result of demos and practice. I am also excited to see the level of experimentation with media as we delve into portraying the concept of "Identity" in the works. Check out some of the progress below: This past weekend has been a whirlwind of activities. From meeting with award-winning students and teachers from across the country, to hearing inspiring speeches delivered by notable creatives in the industry of design, literature, and film, I had an amazing time in New York City for the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. It was such an honor and thrill to see Makenzie get recognized by this organization that has a 91 year history of saluting outstanding student talents in Art and Writing, fostering many to become standouts in creative industries. In addition to seeing the work, learning with teachers, and enjoying the celebration, I also had a chance to explore and be inspired by the city. Some of my favorite moments include walking from Central Park to Battery Park, passing through Rockefeller Center, Times Square on the way to Parsons to pick up our tickets, and proceeding onto the 9/11 Memorial and then Battery Park. I was excited to be invited to The Pratt Institute gallery and hear from leaders in the field as we discussed how to best prepare students for their next experiences. I also enjoyed exploring the High Line Park and viewing the work on display at Whitney Museum of American Art (who is moving location in 2015). I want to give a special thanks to everyone who donated and helped Kenzie make it to this celebration. I want to give a special thanks to the Byron Center Fine Arts Boosters, who foster so many creative experiences for our students in Byron Center, as well as BCPS Superintendent Dan Takens, Fine Arts Director Marc Townley, and BCWMS Principal John Krajewski whose support helped make all of this possible. I work in an amazing district that helps students develop and reach goals, bringing them closer to their dreams. It was a great celebration of creativity and hard work. I am proud to have had this opportunity and invite my students to start thinking over the summer about what works they might start to land them in NYC next year. This week has offered many opportunities to share and celebrate the success of students in the Art classroom. The week started out with our k-12 reception at the Van Singel Fine Arts Center. It is always fun to see what learning takes place in the program as students advance through each grade. I appreciate the parents who were able to bring their children and celebrate their success as we finish out the school year. I am also very excited to announce that our classroom won in each of the three categories for the Meijer Great Choices Film Festival! This is the first year that has happened since we started participating three years ago. I am so thankful to everyone who votes and I am very excited to purchase new equipment for my classroom once our prize money is awarded! There will be a celebration for the winners and their families on June 7th.
Congratulations to the four MAEA State awardees! This was the first year we had four students move on from the Region 9 show to the State level competition and the first year we had two students selected as the top 15 in the State! If you are interested in seeing the winning works, see this post.
Yesterday was the 2014 West Central Michigan Regional Scholastic Art Awards. It was an awesome evening celebrating art as students were recognized for their achievements in categories spanning from drawing to printmaking to animation and film. BCWMS students received 15 awards this year, 5 of which were Gold Keys and will move onto the National Competition in New York City. Byron Center Public Schools Visual Arts program 7-12 received the most recognition in Kent County with 52 awards.
I am incredibly proud to be a part of this program that celebrates students creative endeavors as they speak through visuals. You can see the winning BCWMS works from this year on this post and the list of all of the winners here. It was also amazing to be in venues packed with students, their families, friends, and teachers supporting and enjoying art! This weekend started out with some great news - I found out that all five of the student works submitted to the Michigan Art Education Association Region 9 Show were selected for display at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. Four pieces will even move onto the State Show in March! This is the most success our students have had in this competition since I started entering work several years ago. Here are the winning works: The Winners of the 2014 West Central Michigan Regional Scholastic Art Awards were announced on December 20th. Their work also has a chance of winning the Mark Heckman Special Merit Award where they could win an additional $250. The winners will be recognized at a ceremony on December 14th. We have participated in all four years of this event and it offers such a special opportunity for kids to share their talents in a meaningful way. Congratulations to the winners from Nickels and the High School, as well. BCHS Winner Ethan Karnes will celebrate his second win at this competition (he won with this work as my student four years ago). What can you do with a Pizza Box?I posed this question to students several weeks ago as I announced an opportunity for them to participate in a competition through our local pizza places. I found out that one student decided to take up that challenge and you can help him by clicking on this link and liking his entry shown above! First place wins $500 and Pizza! Good luck to all the contestants as they compete in this challenge!
