Clay Day 3

Projects are really starting to take form as students mold and manipulate their clay projects. 7th grade students (shown above) are using a clay balloon as their main structure to then form their clay projects. 8th grade students are using plastic water bottles as their armature for creating Anthropomorphic vessels that represent themselves.

Working with clay is one of my favorite times of the year. Based on the busy hands working today to get as much done as possible, I think it might be my students' favorite time, too.

Hey, I have been looking through your amazing variety of projects and am extremely impressed. I am a new teacher and am struggling with my planning for projects like this. I was just curious if you could shed some light on your process of introducing this project? What resources do you show the students before hand and what works best for you

Thanks, David! As with anything, you will get the hang of how to plan out projects as you gain experience. I show my students a variety of pieces before and during the process to get their minds going. I also made a comic-like handout for students to use to help them along. The big thing is to have students make something they connect to (something that represents their interests and who they are). If they care about what they are making, then they are invested in how it turns out. I find the projects that give them the chance to share who they are allows that to happen.

Hi I love how your video simplifies this process. I have been having kids who finish early or have missed class look at it so they can begin independently.Do you mind if I "borrow" this video to show my students as a whole? I don't want to steal your content without permission.

You are more than welcome to use any of the resources provided on my blog and/or website. I am a believer in sharing information, so don't ever feel like you are stealing it. As Picasso puts it: "Good artists borrow, great one's steal." Or something like that. I only ask for a shout-out or a nod when you use it with your kids or share it with colleagues.
