Today 7th and 8th grade students were able to attend the Meijer Gardens to see the work of Deborah Butterfield, the butterflies, and the many sculptures by various artists that are on display.

7th and 8th grade students finished up their prints today after a week of experimenting with the media. It was a really rewarding experience that would not have been possible without the Kids in Need Foundation, Office Depot, and the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids who supported the purchase of the equipment used to create the prints through various grants! The final works will be featured on Artsonia this week, so keep a look out for some well done prints that show a variety of color, pattern, texture, and movement. Please make sure to vote for these videos for the Meijer Great Choices Film Festival to help my students win grants for our classroom:
Cupcake Diversity Diversity Lazy Couch Chronicles Keep it Going It's what makes you, YOU! To the Core Healthy Choices Always Win! Words Shouldn't Bring you Down. Today was shortened due to the fog delay. Students continued to work on their clay projects and I had the chance to get my part of the Visual Arts teacher show hung at the Van Singel Fine Arts Center. The work will be on display for the next month and will showcase the talents of the Visual Arts teachers at BCPS. In addition to hanging the work, I was also able to go to the Meijer Gardens to preview the Deborah Butterfield exhibit students will be seeing on the 27th of April. I was excited to see her work, the blooming flowers (which is crazy for this time of year), and the butterflies in the enclosed greenhouse area at the Sculpture Park. I love going to the Gardens and cannot wait to take students there again this year due to a grant awarded from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs! Our program was recently awarded a travel grant to visit the Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park on April 27th. Students participating in the trip will be selected based on their responses on the form attached to this post. Students interested will need to have the form filled out, signed, and returned to me by March 9th. Students accepted to go will be notified via email by March 17th.
Check out the process students used to create their prints by watching the video above. Students should be finished with this project on Monday and uploading to Moodle by Tuesday for me to put on Artsonia. This was a really fun project and students are going to do some more prints next week...
8th grade students continued to work on their prints today by creating more line designs and textures to print over their first color from yesterday. Using complementary colors and monochromatic color schemes, students were able to compare and contrast the variances resulting from the uses of value and color. This project has been a great success so far! I look forward to continuing the tradition of printmaking with the help of funding from Office Depot and Kids in Need. When we return to school on Monday, 8th grade students will begin the process of printmaking. I have not had a lot of practice in printmaking; in fact, this will be my first time teaching this method. So, to get some practice I went up to the school and created a series of prints. I used complementary and monochromatic color schemes to create my 2 color reduction prints. In this assignment students will learn about color, contrast, as well as the use of positive and negative space when creating a print. We will look at work by the artist Swoon as well as Kathe Kollwitz. I am excited to bring printmaking into the art curriculum at BCWMS. The recent grant awarded from Office Depot and Kids in Need will help ensure that students will be able to participate in this assignment by helping provide materials like ink, brayers, and other printmaking tools. Thanks again to the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids for the travel grant that allowed this trip to take place!
8th grade students worked collaboratively today on their Google Docs to complete the Elements and Principles of Design packets. The last day to work on the packets will be tomorrow. After finishing the research, groups will choose the Element or Principle they would like to make a video about and create a visual collage first. Using the collage as a springboard, along with their packets, students will then write scripts, shoot video, use editing software to put it together and finish with music and sound. This project was funded through a grant awarded this year from the Michigan Association of Computer Users in Learning! |
