students selected!

Congrats to the 24 students selected to attend the Meijer Gardens Field Trip on May 6th.

It was a tough decision as many students applied to participate. If you were not selected, keep your eyes and ears open for other opportunities to participate in various art activities in the future.

If you were selected, you would have recieved an email just moments ago from me with the good news! To check your mail, go to http://cloud.bcpsk12.net and use your school login ID and password to sign in.

I am looking for 3-4 volunteers to help supervise the trip; if your parents or guardians are interested, please have them contact me.

Thanks again to the funding provided by BCFAB and the Michigan Department for Arts and Cultural Affairs -- I look forward to sharing the work of Jim Dine with you guys and know it will be a beautiful day!

On May 6th, students will have the opportunity to go to the Meijer Gardens and Sculpture park thanks to a grant from the Michigan Council of Arts and Cultural Affairs as well as funding provided by BCFAB!

Tomorrow I will email and post the permission slip and essay requirement for students interested in going on the trip. There will be at least 10 8th grade and 10 7th grade students chosen to go on the all day trip!

clay creations and the chickensaurus completed

7th and 8th grade students got to see and take home their finished clay pieces last week. It is always amazing to see the transformation that takes place from the planning process, to building the form, to finishing it with glaze.

The Antrhopomorphic bottle project was made possible by funding provided by BCFAB, Arstonia.com, and a grant awarded from the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids through the generous support of Amway, Ted and Brenda Frey, Keller Foundation, Mercantile Bank of Michigan, and Porter Foundation.

I am very excited about how my chickensaurus turned out. It is a fun and interesting piece that was inspired by my students!

7th grade students are going to be starting their portrait projects today.

Using the document provided below, students use digital cameras to take pictures of themselves in expressive ways before editing them in Photoshop and transfering the image into a drawing.

Next week, students will add value and tissue paper to these portraits. These mixed-media masterpieces are always successful and I look forward to seeing their creation!

8th grade students are working on glazing their bottles today and tomorrow. I am excited to see them when they come out of the kiln.

8th grade Anthropomorphic Bottles are being fired this week.

Soon students will glaze them and the project will come to a close. It has been a great experience to have the opportunity to do this project and I am so thankful for the funding that was awarded to make it possible.

8th grade students are finishing their anthropomorphic vessels today!

8th grade students started their Anthropomorphic pottery projects today by wrapping their bottles in clay.

Using the slab roller and other clay tools purchased as a result of the grant awarded from the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids, students were able to cover their bottles with even sheets of clay as we prepare to transform them into vessels that show the personality of the artist who made it.

This semester is focused on the concept of identity in art and how artists throughout history have used this theme in their work.

I look forward to seeing how these plain bottles turn into lively representations of the students who are making them.

Our new slab roller was put to good use today as students rolled out slabs for their projects.

a box full of goodies due to a grant!

Two large boxes full of materials arrived to BCWMS yesterday due to a project I proposed to the Arts Council of Grand Rapids last semester. Glazes, brushes, sponges, extruders, and boxwood tools were among the array of materials that students were able to use today when finishing their clay bowls and sculptures.

The project proposed will begin next week and students will also be able to use the new slab roller, too!

This activity is supported by the Arts Council of Grand Rapids through the generous support of Amyway, Ted and Brenda Frey, Keller Foundation, Merchantile Bank of Michigan, and Porter Foundation.

Here is the new North Star Slab Roller for our classroom - it is pretty awesome!

Emily's bottle shows personality.

8th grade Anthropomorphic Bottles are finally finished!

Students created these forms out of slabs, using a water bottle as the armeture. The inspiration for this project connects to what students are studying in U.S. History - Pre-Civil War Slavery. Students analyzed Anthropomorphic pottery made by African Slaves in South Carolina during this time period before designing and creating their own pieces to represent their personalities.

Each one of these vessels are completely unique to the individual who made them.

I recieved a $1000 grant for this project from the Arts Council of Grand Rapids through the generous support of Amway, Ted and Brenda Frey, Keller Foundation, Mercantile Bank, and Porter Foundation.
