Armed with cameras and excitement, students took turns taking pictures of the nature around our school. Students even found a frog who was kind enough to pose for a portrait. Afterwards, students logged into Moodle and watched a presentation about two artists who use nature in their work: Henri Rousseau and Georgia O'Keeffe. When I see students next time, they will be able to use their images as source material for creating nature paintings and drawings that will be submitted for the Sooper Art 2011 contest due October 22nd.
7th and 8th grade students are using the nice weather as an excuse to get outside and "research" our next subject - Nature in Art.

I am happy to announce that the trend for this year is winning in every way! We are only 3 weeks into school and I have already taken my students on a field trip, had a student nominated by Artsonia as an Artist of the Week, and have managed to increase our abilities in the classroom by receiving over $800 in additional funds from grants and contests! Again it is only 3 weeks into school, so hopefully this is a trend that continues. The first grant received this school year was from the Michigan Art Education Association. With the monies awarded, I was able to purchase additional digital cameras, green screens, flash drives, and tripods for video production in my 7th and 8th grade classes. The second grant received this school year was from the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids. The funds received from this organization was directly linked to the trip my students took yesterday to attend workshops and view art as a part of Artcation Day during ArtPrize. This is the second year we have applied for and received this funding from the Arts Council, which allows our student to travel to this great event. The most current funding resource has been from The Teaching Palette, an online resource for Art Teachers by Art Teachers. They asked for teachers to submit their favorite lesson plan, and I did. When they did their drawing for a winner of a DonorsChoose. org $100 gift card, my name emerged and now I get to use the funds to provide more supplies for my students! With so much success, so early in the year, I cannot wait to see how the rest of the school year unfolds and what other opportunities will be sent our way as a result! With ArtPrize just around the corner, I wanted to make sure you all were aware and ready for Sooper Art 2011, too! Last year we had a number of students receive recognition from this contest. In addition to having their work on display at the Grand Rapids Art Museum, winning students also received $100 savings bonds each! To see last year's winners, just click on this link. You will see 6 BCWMS students listed among the winners! Did you make lots of cool art this summer? Want a chance to post it and win some cool stuff from the Scholastic Art Awards? Then enter the Summer Fun People's Choice Contest! This contest is calling for students from grades 7-12 to submit work they have created over the summer for an online vote. The work with the most votes will win and the artist will receive bragging rights along with a goodie bag filled with Scholastic Art Award prizes (including a $50 gift card from Amazon)! The deadline for entry is September 15. This is a great opportunity to share your work with the world and get your family and friends involved with supporting your creative spirit. Be sure to let me know if you enter, so I can vote for you, too! Congrats to Julia, Jason, Calvin, and Matt whose work was chosen in the Celebrating Art Contest for Spring 2011.These students will be published in a book and will be up for the next round of competition where they could win $100! We will find out the winners next Tuesday - Good Luck!
Students finished their Doodle4Google entries today. The theme this year is "What I'd like to do someday..." From traveling to space or becoming a great chef, the illustrations are fun and colorful. See all of them here. The winner of this contest will be awarded a scholarship, computer, and trip to NYC! Let's wish our BCWMS students much luck! Students are starting their Doodle4Google competition entries today. The theme for this year's doodle is "What I'd like to do someday..." Students are currently brainstorming what they would like to do and then drawing thumbnail sketches of their aspirations before starting their finals. From large scale goals of living on the moon, to the more simplistic want of planting a garden, students are choosing all kinds of images to show what they would like to do someday. Keep checking in to see the results! The deadline for turning in completed entries is next week. For additional forms or informations, please click on the image. Students finished their masks today and turned them in for a grade. Some chose to compete in the Scholastic competition, but know that they have until FRIDAY to turn in their essay and contest form. It was a pleasure to see how these images have progressed since last week. They are bright and full of energy, just like the artists who have created them. Find more on our gallery. Save the frogs day is in April - start thinking of ideas on how you can create an award-winning logo for this contest this year!
