Final Projects and Chances to Play

5/28/2014

One of the best parts of my job is the amount of time I get to play around with materials, experimenting with solutions before coming up with which solution works best and acting on it. It is even better when I give my students the chance to do the same thing. For their final projects, students are given a variety of choices in demonstrating the concepts and skills they have learned over the course of the term.

For 7th grade, students can select to create a video, video game (using Gamestar Mechanic), or comic that covers art concepts and skills learned over the course of the term. Mid-way through their projects, students used a peer critique sheet to check on a partner's work and get feedback on their own. They then used the feedback to make their projects better.

8th grade students are creating a reflection video where they select two works that demonstrate the most growth over the course of their experiences in Art. It is awesome that they can use their Artsonia gallery and go back years to compare projects and skills over time. They are also explaining the process in which they used to create their work and artists who use similar materials or concepts.

In my After School Art class, we have been taking advantage of the sun by creating the Cyanotypes you see below. We are using NaturePrint Paper and any objects we can find to create the images below. Students are also experimenting with Gelli Arts printing plates to create a variety of images before we finish out the school year.

Below is an example of the print made with Puffy Paint, bubble wrap, and some number cutouts from a Cricut machine. You have the print and the ghost, which shows how you can get more than one image from this mono print method.

Lots of Choices

11/26/2013

For the past two weeks, students in both 7th and 8th grade classes had a lot of decisions to make as they worked through their projects. 7th grade students focused on story-telling as they worked on creating videos, video games, or comics. 8th grade students worked with form as they decided what to create with paper. You can see all of the results on our online gallery, but here is a peek into the process below:
Picture
7th grade students used the website www.gamestarmechanic.com to create their video games. They focused on telling a good story and weaving in other class content in their games.
Picture
Some students chose to tell their story through a comic.
Other students created their videos for the Meijer Great Choices Video Competition to focus on Healthy Choices, Character, or Diversity.

Here are a few of the finished sculptures created by 8th grade students. You can see more on our Artsonia gallery.

Students viewed each others videos about artists and ideas covered this semester today to prepare for exams starting tomorrow. Above is one of the more inventive scenarios to discuss the artist being covered. Overall, the quality and content of the videos submitted this semester was some of the best since I started teaching this project last school year. Just imagine what it will be like once we get our new tech tools... CAN'T WAIT!

8th graders were ready to assume the roles of many of the artists we studied in class for their informational videos. From Andy Warhol (above) to Shepard Fairey (left), students used a variety of "costumes" to get the desired effect.

This project is outlined on this webpage and I have given presentations on this topic at the Michigan Association of Computer Users in Learning conference as well as Kendall College of Art and Design. This project was awarded a 2nd place prize in the 2011 PBS Innovation Awards and I am currently working on a video to submit in the 2012 STEMie awards. First place award includes $15000 for the winning classroom - imagine all of the cool stuff we could do with that!

8th grade students took a break from their Art infomercials today to learn about the work of Andy Goldsworthy.

This environmental artist uses nature as a way to create art that is meant to last for a short period of time. He uses objects found in nature to create his sculptures and as you can see from the video below, the effects are stunning.

With such a nice weekend ahead of us, I challenge you to go out and make some art using nature as inspiration!

7th grade students are currently working on animations using Photoshop. Tomorrow they are going to go a little less tech and do it the old fashion way with flip books and thaumatropes. If you are interested in learning how animation works, check out the video above that explains the concept of persistence of vision in animation.

some perspective

I referred to the video above last week when talking about perspective. I think it does a nice job of clearly illustrating the use of a vanishing point in the various geometric scenarios the lead singer finds herself in when walking through the picture frame. Since some students had no idea what I was talking about, I thought it might be a good idea to post the video here.

Students have been working in the hallway last week to create drawings using the principles of perspective. The results will be posted once they finish sometime next week. To help illustrate the ways perspective drawings work, check out the following student-created videos below.

From now until April 27th, you can help our classroom win one of the 12 cash prizes from the Meijer Great Choices Film Festival where students created various PSAs promoting character, diversity, and healthy choices.

8 student films from BCWMS were accepted into the competition and can be found by scrolling through these pages:

Thank you for your help in this effort to showcase student work and garner additional funds for our classroom!

7th and 8th grade students were given the opportunity to create short videos about Diversity, Healthy Choices, or Character. Winning classrooms will win $500 for their room and students will have their short films shown on the big screen. Although these projects are due tomorrow, here is one group's that finished today.

Since this is the second to last day of art before exams, it was spent finishing up projects and studying for the exam.

I have really enjoyed this first group of students and although I am sad to see them go, I am looking forward to getting to do it all over again with a new group!

I will be posting the final art and video projects online within the week - so keep your eyes open!
