Sooper Sunday

Sooper Art 2016 celebrations did not disappoint. It was great to celebrate all of the Michigan student artists from across the state and see their efforts be rewarded with recognition and prizes.

BCWMS had two winners this year, continuing the tradition that started six years ago. This annual competition has been a great tool to get students thinking about the environment and to showcase their ideas and skills.

I am very proud of Ana and Sarah and look forward to seeing which students enter work again next year.

I am super excited to announce that two BCWMS artist received top 15 placement in their age group for Sooper Art 2016!

This environmental art competition is hosted by the GRAM every year and this is the third year in a row we have had multiple BCWMS students awarded the honor of having their work on display at the GRAM and a $100 prize!

Considering we are currently finishing up projects on a variety of issues, it is always nice to see how students interpret the environment each year this competition arrives. We will find out who receives the special top prize in each age group during the awards ceremony on May 22nd!

Sooper Art 2015

This year marks the fifth year for the annual Sooper Art Competition. This environmentally themed competition asks students to render works based on concepts and ideas inspired by nature. Out of 400 works submitted from 29 schools in the state, BCWMS had four winners from the 48 awarded! It was fun to see the five student works from our district recognized and also enjoy the works on display in the current exhibition at the Grand Rapids Art Museum!

I am proud to announce that four BCWMS students received recognition (and a $100 price each) for the 2015 Sooper Art Contest! This competition is celebrating its' 5th year of honoring student work that highlights environmental issues. We have been participating in the contest each year, with students receiving recognition in four of the years. The winning work can be found on the Sooper Yooper Flickr page as well as displayed at the GRAM for the awards ceremony on May 16th.

Spaced Out

Being that is was Earth Day this week, 7th grade students delved into their own planetary wonderings by creating the spacescapes seen below. This is a fun and quick Photoshop exploration, thanks to the help of Ian Sands.

Emily: Everything living, whether it's a bug or a human, dies and then decays. Animals decompose into the ground, and eventually become apart of the environment. Not only that, but in the bible it talks about how the earth and the plants and animals were created, and from that came humans. In the circle of life or from evolution or however else we humans came to be, we are all apart of nature and our natural environments. So, if that's true, then shouldn't we try to keep our environment clean and preserve nature? Shouldn't we protect our environment, if it is one of the things that is so involved in the human race, that we will all come to rest in when we die?

Jewel: This artwork definitely fits in with the theme of environment because it shows how our environment is being harmed, what it will become and how soon, we won't even be able to live here any more.

Katie: My art fits with the idea of the environment because if we don't take care of it then it will be destroyed. Thats what the left eye represents. the right one tells us that there is beauty in all of the world and it can be found in all places.

Ethan: So, this is a image that is supposed to show the beauty of nature and how pretty things that aren't polluted can look, I decided to do this, because: one, I love to draw trees, and two, it was something new, that I hadn't really done much of before, like the sun, and the grass shadow, and water reflections. I feel that this fits in the competition because it's (as I said before) supposed to show the beauty that non-polluted nature can have/show.

Sooper Environments

In the spirit of Earth Day, both 7th and 8th grade students worked on finishing environmental pieces this week, some of which will make it to the Sooper Art Competition. The timing for this project and competition are perfect to get students thinking about their environment and how they can positively impact the future through their present actions.

2013 Environmental Art Competition

The winners for the 4th Annual Sooper Art Competition were announced this evening and I am proud to announce that BCWMS students Anna Pavlak and Emma McCloud were among those whose work was awarded.

Both students will have their work on display at the Grand Rapids Art Museum and receive $100 prize for winning. Their work also has a chance of winning the Mark Heckman Special Merit Award where they could win an additional $250. The winners will be recognized at a ceremony on December 14th.

We have participated in all four years of this event and it offers such a special opportunity for kids to share their talents in a meaningful way. Congratulations to the winners from Nickels and the High School, as well. BCHS Winner Ethan Karnes will celebrate his second win at this competition (he won with this work as my student four years ago).

Sooper Saturday

Students from around the state of Michigan gathered at the Grand Rapids Art Museum on Saturday to celebrate their accomplishments as winners of the 2012 Sooper Art competition.

Students work was juried and awarded $100 and put on display in the GRAM's education center. Byron Center had 16 of the 45 winners from around the State. The pictures above are from the 5 WMS winners Natalie Poll, Kimmie Stump, Chase Zawacki, Krista Bartholomy, and Stephanie Bueche.

Natalie's turtle won recognition.

I am proud to announce that BCWMS had five students recognized as winners in the Sooper Art Contest this year held at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. The competition was focused on the subject of nature and the environment. Students were asked to create works for the competition out of materials of their choice and winners will receive recognition at a ceremony next weekend where they will also be presented with a $100 cash prize.

There are a number of Byron Center winners from other grades in our district, too! This is the third year students have participated in this competition and last year Tyler Clifton, a BCHS senior also won best of show. They will announce this year's best of show on Saturday.

Although none of the WMS entries this year received recognition at Sooper Art 2011, I am very proud of the participation of the students from BC. In all, BCPS had 12 students receive recognition at this year's competition.
