Collage and Value

5/20/2015

Earlier this week, students finished their collages and value drawings and turned them in on Artsonia. It was fun to see them experiment with methods that ranged in scope that included realism and abstraction.

For inspiration, we looked at the work of Chuck Close and Noli Novak. I also came across the work of David Lock, which is perfect for this assignment and I will make sure to reference again in the future with my students. Here are the works I saw last weekend from his Misfit series, currently on display at the GRAM:

I really enjoy discovering new artists when I go to a museum, especially when they are so connected to curriculum already being explored in the classroom. I immediately shared these works with my students as they finished up their collages. I have all kinds of ideas on how to connect this type of work together next year.

Speaking of making connections, I made sure to include Noli Novak in on the creative process by tweeting her some pictures of the students in action. She was gracious enough to respond, making my students feel encouraged and special.

@campbellartsoup happy to see that! They are amazing!

Here are a few process pictures of the students working on each piece simultaneously. I find that when I am offering more than one process at a time, students move freely between them and make decisions on which they would like to spend more time on and which will be completed first.
Here are some completed works of both the collages and drawings. You can find more work on our class Artsonia gallery.
Picture
Katie H: I first found the features of the face: eyes, nose, mouth. and then I found skin and hair then I found colors for the background I pasted them in small strips. I like this a lot. what I really like about this work is the background because one that is what i took the longest on and that is also the thing that I think brings out the piece the most.
Picture
Porter S.: To make this artwork I used a variety of magazines and put them together to make a face that looks realistic. I think it turned out better then I thought it would. I think that because I thought it would be very plain and simple but I found out it was fun so I started having fun with it and experimented with it and mixed and matched until I was satisfied with my work.
Picture
Hannah L.: I think that my work is abstract as most of the pieces are but i suppose it is one of the more "realistic" pieces. So i first started off by finding different pieces for the background then glued them on. And then i began looking for skin tones to use for the face and the neck and glued that on top of the background. After i did that i found eyes, a nose, and a mouth and glued them on to the face on long with the hair.
Picture
Kaitlyn V.: I was inspired by Noli Novak and her idea for drawing with dots and not using lines. I had the opportunity of doing this and making in into this piece of art. For the background i did a new technique where I scrape oil pastels on water and it changes everything up. I think that this was a fun piece that I had the opportunity to make and was glad I could make it.
Picture
Jordan C.: In my artwork, I used value by having an imaginary light in the top left of my paper. I used darker shades for the spots that wouldn't be touching the light as much. I love this artwork, and the reason I did a colorful background is so it will make things pop out more. I think I did an amazing job at shading were I should have and should not have shaded as darkly, Overall I think it is fantastic.
Picture
Jewel R.: I used many different values in my work, Light dark, middle. The usage of a pencil can create so many different things, light, shadows, ext... I was looking forward to do a shading project and we finally did. ^-^ I really love this piece of art work and learned that shading with your pencil isn't the only way to show value. I will definitely try stippling again. Hopefully get as good as Noli Novak!

7th grade students are exploring ways to show value in their work through the use of our different shading pencils or stippling with Sharpies. We used Chuck Close and Noli Novak as artists of inspiration for this work. Novak is also being used to inspired the collage portraits being done in class, like the one below. Using a variety of media at once is always fun in the art room and I look forward to seeing how the work turns out in a few days.

While I was Away

One of the neatest things to come out of the 1:1 work with students is their ability to continue working on things when I am out of the classroom. I had the great honor and privilege to not only attend the MACUL (Michigan Association of Computer Users in Learning) at the end of this week, but I also got to be a part of three presentations while there. Even though this meant spending time away from my students to get and share insight in best educational practices, my students did not miss a beat and here are some of the pieces students submitted while I was away:

7th grade Portraits

7th grade students finished their portraits this week using Chuck Close and Noli Novak as inspiration. After drawing their faces in a neutral value scheme, they selected a material for their background and filled it with color. They then experimented with collage as they cut and pasted a portrait using their reference photo as a guide. Using Artsonia classroom mode, I was able to see these works get done in real time as students turned them in on the computer Thursday and Friday.
Picture
For Emma's portrait, she decided to use pencil to show her values in the face and a water/chalk shred for the colorful background.
Picture
In Ava's work, she uses a stippling technique to explore value and in the background she overlaid tissue paper on a wet surface to get the tie-dyed look.
Picture
After students drew their portraits, they then created a collage from them with images cut from magazines. Here is Noah's collage.

8th grade Portraits

In addition to studying the artists mentioned in the 7th grade unit, 8th grade students also examine the work of Shepard Fairey and Rob Kelly before making decisions on how they want their portraits to look. Students have complete control over the pose, material, and execution of these works. After completing their portraits in real space, they went digital and (with the help of Ian Sands) created the pixelated versions of themselves.
Picture
Lauren decided to show the different levels of value in her face through both color and patterns.
Picture
Kayla used paint in this image to explore value. She then decided to add some different textures and shapes to activate the background.
Picture
Shane used marker in his image to show the values of his face.

After students completed their portraits in real space, they went digital and created these pixelated portraits. This one is created by Dillon.

As highlighted in previous posts, students worked on portraits a couple of weeks ago inspired by the work of Noli Novak. As you can see from the above comment, she took notice of student work and commented on Artsonia! Thank you, Noli, for taking the time to encourage my students and their creative endeavors in class.

7th grade students are working on their portraits this week. We learned about the work of Chuck Close and Noli Novak before getting started with our own expressive images. Students were able to select whether to add value with pencil or dots and how to fill in the background.

We will finish these works by tomorrow and post the result on our Artsonia gallery. Here are a few finished works so far.

Both 7th and 8th grade students are moving onto portraiture this week as they look at some of my favorite living artists and how they tackle the elements of the face. Chuck Close, Shepard Fairey, and Noli Novak are among the artists we look at before getting to work.

7th grade students are basing their work closely to Novak's and we share our progress with her via Twitter. She has been a great inspiration for our class and has even donated her time to talk with us via Skype last Spring.

I am really excited about the work being completed so far and look forward to sharing them through our online gallery on Artsonia!

an interview with an artist

Today my students were lucky enough to spend some time with Noli Novak, an artist they studied for their last project via Skype. She creates landscapes and portraits using both Stippling (tiny dots) and Collage (cut paper) methods to get a range of value or color.

In addition to hearing about what inspires her work, how she came to be an artist, and how she makes the photo-realistic work she creates, some students were able to share their pieces inspired by her work. It was a great exchange and I am very appreciative that she was so generous with her time. This was a definite highlight for me this school year and I am sure that those students can say the same!

7th grade students are mixing up media today after adding value with pencil on their portraits yesterday. Today they are using Modge Podge and tissue paper to give their background a pop of color and contrast the value scale applied to their drawings.

After the decoupage dries, students will add line designs and patterns with sharpie and then use their photographs to create abstracted portraits using various cut up magazine cut outs. We are using Noli Novak as inspiration for both of these projects and are excited to chat with her in an upcoming Skype interview when we return from break!
