More Finished Work

Last week I pointed out that some students need a little more time to do their best work. Due dates in my classroom are firm, but flexible for those who would benefit from a little extra time. We need turn in dates to help hold students accountable, but we also need some ability to be flexible so that arbitrary dates do not hold back those who want to do something extra special.

It was exciting to see the following works find their way to the finish line this week. I am very excited for how they turned out, but probably even more so for the process in which each student found their way to the best possible solution. I appreciated reading their learning statements and how many hope these works will make their way into competition at some point this school year.
Picture
Oliver: In my artwork I was inspired by Julian Opie. But instead of doing a piece like his, I desisted to do the opposite of his art. I did a pencil and paper of a realistic face with lots of shadows. I used huge eye because Julian Opie's art has small beady eyes. My art relates to the theme of this project because it is of the "Me" in the project.
Picture
Leila: In this piece, I have a print of myself reaching for the stars. I literally took the saying, "Reach for the Stars", and incorporated myself. I decided to add wings to the figure to have a dreamy effect. I used newspaper that had been painted on for the feathers. For the stars, I opened up certain sections of the negative cardboard space and placed reflective material inside. I ripped parts of the cardboard off, so the piece would have a variety of different textures. In the end, this piece turned out really well and I hope to enter it in to Scholastic!
Picture
Mitchell: This piece has helped me learn how to use various techniques such a molding with plaster and clay and using many different colors to really help bring out my artwork. The art work connects to the theme of the project by symbolizing the ME in you me everybody, the project shows how my face can just be a plain piece of artwork but when you add different textures and visual elements such as unique indents into the clay and using a variety of colors you make or break a piece especially when it's clay.
Picture
Tess: This work focuses on the everybody piece of the project theme. It deals with the current political issue of whether or not football players should be allowed to kneel during the national anthem in protest of equal treatment for all people. I chose to use mixed media to create this piece. For the background, I used block printing, and for the rest of the work, I used cut paper. These materials help convey the message I am trying to communicate because they are bold, and simple, making the message heard.
Picture
Chloe: In this piece I used mixed media and for the background. I used different sponges and techniques to make the background look the way it does. And then the people are made out of black construction paper and I used a xacto knife to get a lot of little details of the peoples faces and hair. This piece ties in with the theme you, me, everybody because I focused in on the people who are really mean a lot to me and these people are my friends so I decieded to do everybody.
Picture
Marie: In this piece of art I chose to portray the idea of 'everybody' by using bottle caps and portraits. I intended that viewers would receive the message that everyone is different, and in a world of differences it is important that we find our own way to stand out. To help push this theme I placed one portrait out of place that had a different background, and a different skin color. By using bottle caps and randomized paint colors, I hoped to communicate this same idea of everyones differences. But by placing them all together, I hope to show viewers that we can come together as a community to create something bigger than our differences.

Building Skills and Understanding

Students were introduced to our next Challenge Theme: Spaces and Places (real or imagined). We looked at the work of Vincent Van Gogh, Ansel Adams, Georgia O'Keeffe, David Hockney, and Nathan Walsh before starting out plans for possible ways in which students could explore ideas surrounding the places we visit.

It was fun to see students dive into the sketchbooks right away and start planning out ideas without hesitation. The work we did for our first challenge has helped spark the importance of thinking through ideas and trying out various approaches in a smaller format before making a commitment on a larger scale. This shows me that students are able to generate ideas on their own, do the research they need to help inform their choices, and try out solutions before making a choice on what interests them most.

We also used this week to broaden our skills with various mini-challenges using collaged paper and digital works. Students learned about how to establish an environment by activating the foreground, middle ground, and background of a work as well as how to use various tools to achieve desired effects. It was fun to see students use these skill-builders as a springboard for generating ideas for their project and the results of their learning.

Landscape Fast Collage Challenge

Students created the following landscape collages to demonstrate their understanding of foreground, middle ground, and background while also using collage skills to complete a work. We started out by looking at The Art Assignment Video featuring landscape artist Robyn O'Neill before getting out the glue and scissors and getting to work.

What made this a successful challenge was that the size of these collages were kept to 6x4 inches big and students only had about 25 minutes to create them. Students sometimes struggled with the limited size and time, but by keeping it small they had to forget about being perfect with their choices and focus on demonstrating the various aspects of a landscape as well as the figure/ground relationship. Some enjoyed the process so much, they made more for fun.

Photoshop Challenge 2

Students were given another Photoshop Challenge to complete this week as well. These works help build students skills while producing works they are proud of and that they were able to have a say in making. It has been fun to see some students really grow their understanding of how to digitally manipulate images and how to make images from scratch, rather than always relying on the internet.

Here are several examples to show the range of methods in which students created works to demonstrate their understanding of creating visual space while manipulating the methods and tools within Photoshop.

Almost The End of the Quarter

With the end of first quarter next week, it has been such a delight to see students grow and shape their understanding of art in new ways. Students have been exposed to a variety of artists, methods, and tools to use as a starting point for their own creative journeys. I am excited to see this quarter come to a close and how students leverage their learning from this quarter to push themselves even more next!

Short Week

This was a short week. I mean, a two-day kind of short week. So, what do we do with that time to make it meaningful and productive? A couple of things. In addition to students working on Challenge 3 works, students also researched and wrote about artists of their choice (focusing on the use of media and what they can learn from viewing the work) and uploaded images from last week's "speed dating" challenge.

Here are some highlights of those completed tasks:

Mixed Media Speed Dating Challenge

Picture
Paige S.: While creating this artwork, I learned a lot of new art techniques. This included, adding texture and how to draw things up close. I learned that you can use an ink quill to add details to your art, which I never would have thought could be a art material. Plus, I learned how collaging can also be an art technique. I also learned that it is fine if your art isn't perfect, and it's ok to not have a perfect, planned out, background. Overall, I learned a lot of new techniques and had an enjoyable time creating this work.
Picture
Colton S.: During this activity I learned a lot more about different types of media and how to use them. I am very excited to experiment with these materials in new ways for another project.
Picture
Brandt. B: I really like this piece I made because of its creativity. I like the material choice I used and how I blended everything together into one picture. I really like the time and value I put into this artwork and the result that came out.
Picture
Logan M.: I learned to use many techniques to make art and found out that I should not use the same type of materials all the time.
Picture
Braedan H.: This artwork was made with many materials such as gel pens, pastels, paint and a few others. The most used material was a paint, either in sponge form or spray bottle form. My favorite material to use was the gell pen.

Artist of Interest

Our classroom is very fortunate to have access to a lot of resources thanks to grants and donations raised throughout the year. One way I use funding to add resources to my classroom is through the investment of a classroom subscription to Scholastic Art Magazine. I have subscribed to them for years and use them as a way to introduce students to new artists they they get to select from the online archives.

Once a month, students are asked to go into the website and select an artist to write about using a specific rubric. For this round, students were asked to explain how the material the artist uses impacts they way they view it, to explain how they can learn from this artist in their own work, and to use art vocabulary in the process.

Thanksgiving and Giving Thanks

Picture
My husband and I at the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, TN.
I am very fortunate for many things I have in my life and the experiences I have been able to have over the years. For Thanksgiving this year, I had the great opportunity to travel to Tennessee and visit Nashville, Chattanooga, and the Smoky Mountains. Along the way, we visited new sites that I was urged to travel to by my fellow Art teachers.

I want to give a special thanks to Ted, Allison, and Cassie for guiding me to visit super special places like The Parthenon, The Frist, and the Hunter Museum. It was a great time for view works of art and also enjoy nature.

I hope everyone had a wonderful time this holiday weekend with their friends and family and that you had a moment to reflect on and enjoy the things that give you pause for thanks.

Challenge 3

Picture
Students took notes on the artists for this challenge by connecting the work they viewed to themselves, other artworks, and the world.
Students were introduced to a new challenge this week: Treasure and/or Trash. They looked at the work of Joseph Cornell, Claus Oldenburg, and others before coming up with plans for their own piece that looks at objects and how to capture and manipulate them to create art.

After planning works and getting feedback, students spend a good chunk of this week applying ideas into action through their art. The best part of this new challenge is that students may not use media they have used in the past. This has forced many to try new things and get out of their comfort zone.

You can check out some of the process below:

Mixed-Media "Speed Dating"

Picture
I recently came across a post from another Art teacher about how she used a fast-paced introduction and application method of 2D media and labeled it "speed dating." I decided to adapt that process for my classroom this week by first having students do an observational drawing of either a piece of string or their shoe, focusing in on it so it fills the page. Later on this week, students then took that drawing and went through a five station rotation, spending five minutes on each material (sharpies/gell pens/stencils, watercolors, pen and ink, oil and chalk pastels, and collage) to complete their composition. Each station had the material speak from their point of view to introduce and invite students to use them. For example, at the collage station, the note said: "Hello, I am collage. Did you know I came from a term that means "to glue" in French? Well, now you do. You need to collage at least two pieces of paper on your work. If you want to be fancy, you can collage over your drawing and continue it over top. Please be kind to the glue sticks. Oh yeah, fun fact: I was discovered by Picasso."

Because this was purely about the experience of both the observational drawing and the application of the variety of media, students felt free to take risks and really attack the picture plane. They will finish up their work by posting it to Artsonia next week. This is a participation piece and my hope is that they will use their experience to make choices in future works.

Here are some images from the process:

Scholastic Count Down

On Wednesday of this week, some of my students and I went up to the High School for our first ever Scholastic Art Awards Critique Session. It was fun to see my students (past and current) share their ideas and get feedback in this forum. We plan to hold two more group sessions like this before our submission deadline of December 15th.

Well At Work

Because of where this project falls in the marking period, students have a little bit more time than the other themes to work through ideas. It has been fun to see the process develop over time and how ideas have evolved along the way. Here are some images to reflect the work being done this week in the art classroom.
Picture
Even I am getting in on the action, creating this fantasy environment above. I am inspired by my love of drawing hands and a story I came up with along the way. Who will end up with the key to unlock the door - her sister, the fish, the bird, or the hand from above?

8th grade students worked on Monsters last week, inspired by Japanese contemporary artist, Takashi Murakami. This year was especially fun because we got to use a new technique of felting wool on for extra details due to a Donors Choose project being funded! Here is a video from last year, explaining the process:

Students are back to work today as we get back into the swing of things, finishing off the final 9 weeks of school before Summer break! Some students couldn't wait to return to school after Spring Break, showing off the work they accomplished while on vacation.

The piece above, by Marcus, was made out of push pins. This piece will be among many for the Spring Art Show at the Van Singel Fine Arts Center during the month of May.

7th grade students are mixing up media today after adding value with pencil on their portraits yesterday. Today they are using Modge Podge and tissue paper to give their background a pop of color and contrast the value scale applied to their drawings.

After the decoupage dries, students will add line designs and patterns with sharpie and then use their photographs to create abstracted portraits using various cut up magazine cut outs. We are using Noli Novak as inspiration for both of these projects and are excited to chat with her in an upcoming Skype interview when we return from break!

8th grade students worked on finishing up their portraits today. They worked on value for this project, as well as capturing an emotion through facial features. Students used traditional materials like pencil or paint, as well as non traditional materials like yarn and cut paper.

I will be posting the finished works next week, as soon as students finish loading them on Moodle.
