Last STEAM Collaboration

Picture
Students presented their last STEAM collaboration for the year this week. For this challenge, students were asked to design and create structures that represented spaces we use like schools, businesses, homes, and other architectural works.

It was fun to see students from both classes work together to create a variety of buildings using blueprints, digital renderings, and physical models. The pieces are currently on display in our Library until the end of the year.

DE is DONE

Picture
Another semester of DE is in the books. It has been almost 8 years since the last time I taught 3D and I am so thankful I was able to come back to it with this group. These kids were amazing to work with, full of so many ideas, and willing to push themselves to try new ideas and techniques.

I was really excited to see their final exam projects complete and how they took the opportunity of designing their own prompt with their choice of media. It gave students to try some things they were interested in doing or revisiting ideas left undone from the past. Here are a few of the results:

For our final farewell of the group, we met at the Meijer Gardens to complete a scavenger hunt and sketchbook activity. A special thanks to The Byron Center Fine Arts Boosters for sponsoring our trip!

Building More Skills

Picture
Students also spend this week building skills by learning about printmaking and observational drawing. Our newest themed project asks students to examine the objects we interact with on a daily basis and make art that focuses on that relationship. In addition to that, students are also being challenged to use a different media to work with for this piece.

Next week we will spend time refining ideas and finalizing media for use to work towards project goals. Here are some works in progress so far:

Arts a la Mode Prep

We are getting excited for our annual Fine Arts Night on May 22nd and starting to put the finishing touches on our preparations for the event that includes Empty Bowls, Performances, Art Displays, and STEAM activities (two of which were funded with DonorsChoose.org requests earlier this year).

We are also in process of gathering volunteers for the night, asking students and parents to help out. If you are a student or parent at BCPS and would like to help, please contact me for more information.

ArtPrize10 Update

Picture
We are continuing work on our part of the ArtPrize piece this year. I am so excited to see it coming together, but know we still have A LOT of work to do before it is complete. This week was spent cutting a lot of reflective paper and then figuring out how to place it on the work.

Hopefully next week we will be able to get our profile up and running and start to secure a venue. If you would like to connect, please visit our ArtPrize page.

Remixing

Students worked on remixing their past works into new works this week, using either new compositions, materials, or skills to demonstrate their art understandings. In addition to using materials from the past, students experimented with some new ideas and took time to get feedback on their works using a peer critique method. Because of a small disruption in the week of an ice day, not everyone's work was handed in as scheduled. I look forward to when the rest come in on Monday and getting this class wrapped up for the semester next week!

Trever O.: This piece was a remix of my old work that was my fish piece from 5th grade called Water Color Fish Painting. I kept the outline of the plants and environment similar and copied it four times. I changed the color scheme for each frame from the original. I used Andy Warhol’s idea of copying each frame and coloring it different with a color scheme for each. I changed it by rather having what seemed to be a blue background with a different color I used complimentary colors. I chose this piece because I was really interested in doing a block print piece.
Picture
Picture
Trever W.: I used the abstract of everyday objects. one similarity is the lies that divide the sections of color. I choose to remix this art piece because I thought it would be fun to use the colors in a way that I do not use a lot. One difference is the heart is in the middle of the new one and not the old one.

Kristina B.: I chose to remix a project that I did from earlier this year for a photoshop challenge. Comparing these two, this project I did the whole screen instead of just my face to add more of an effect to your eyes. The same thing that I did with both projects is I used photoshop and did an image of my face facing the other way each time. I chose to remix this project because I felt that I could improve it and make it more appealing when people look at it. What I did to change this piece was to do the whole screen instead of just my face.

#iceday

On Thursday, we had an ice day. Instead of wasting away in front of the TV, I took the time to make these beauties for my new Schoology courses next semester. We are changing to the enterprise version of the website, so I am learning new things and needed more colored cans for each of my sections. Before I made these, I was feeling anxious about the change. I still feel anxious, but not nearly as much. Going to the Meijer Gardens later in the day to see some of the new Ai WeiWei exhibit also helped.

Next week is the LAST week of the semester before we start over again with a new group. I am really proud of what has been accomplished so far and I am excited to see what is ahead of us as we finish out this semester and begin a new one.

Intro to Photo

I did get a chance to start with a new group of students this week in my KCAD DE course. Our "get-to-know" you activity was a fun one where students were challenged to make images that created the letters to spell their names. Here are two example of the results:

Meijer Gardens Fun

Yesterday marked our annual Meijer Gardens field trip. This year we combined Art and STEM students to attend the trip and tried a new tour that was all about Surviving in the Tropics.

It was fun to spend the day in the sun, learning about artists, and walking the grounds. This is one of my favorite things to do with students and I have some fun ideas on how to make it even better next year...

Check out a video from the day!
This week was a big week. We had our Fine Arts Night (look for a post soon), we had our field trip, and we finished up our last project (again, look for a post soon).

I am pretty sure I am going to be spending the weekend looking something like this:

Meijer Gardens 2015

Thanks to funding from the Byron Center Fine Arts Boosters and support from administration, the STEM teacher and I were able to take a group of our students to the Frederik Meijer Gardens on Friday. In addition to viewing works from Jim Dine, Louise Nevelson, Juame Plensa, Deborah Butterfield, and many other notable contemporary and classic sculptors, we also learned about various eco-systems within the gardens and how environments support the capacity for life in various ways.

One of my favorite moments was when the students took over and lead our tour of the outdoor sculptures. Each group selected a sculpture of interest using a shared Google Document and then shared their findings once we arrived at the sculpture. I first did this last year after reading about how Theresa McGee did this with her students.

I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to take students to the Gardens at least once every year for the past nine years! It has been fun to see the amount of growth that has occurred each year in terms of both sculpture collection and habitats at the Gardens and to share these experiences with Art with my students!
It was a great day with great art and (almost) everyone walked away with a chance to interact with work in meaningful ways.

At the Gardens

This year students attending the field trip were responsible for researching and presenting on a sculpture from the park. It was a great experience to hear what students learned about each sculpture.
Taking students to the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park is a great way to start any week! Even though the forecast threatened rain, we made it back pretty dry with only a few sprinkles to contend with at the end. This year I tried something new by having students lead the outside tour. Students selected a piece from a shared Google Document to present in front of when reaching that sculpture on the walking tour. I got this idea from a fellow art teacher and friend, Tricia Fuglestad from Illinois.

This was a great way to spend the day! I am so thankful to the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the Michigan Youth Arts Council for offering the travel grant that allows my students to make it back to the Gardens year after year. See a video of the full trip below.

We had an awesome day today at the Meijer Gardens! It is one of my favorite places to walk and enjoy art as it coexists with nature. Due to a travel grant from Michigan Youth Arts, I was able to take students to enjoy the bright sunny day outside and the butterfly exhibit on the inside! Students even got to touch a piece of glass that was left as an example from the Chihuly sculpture. We have been doing this field trip with BCMWS students for over five years and I am already excited to do it again next year! Check out some of the highlights in our video below.

Today 7th and 8th grade students were able to attend the Meijer Gardens to see the work of Deborah Butterfield, the butterflies, and the many sculptures by various artists that are on display.

It was a great time that was made possible do to a grant from the Michigan Council of Arts and Cultural Affairs. A HUGE THANKS to that organization whose funds made this possible!
