As you can see from our video, it was a great time. We were able to check out many of the top 25 picks for the competition that was not announced until later today. I hope students are able to go back and check out more of the sites while this event continues for the next couple of weeks. And remember, if you take a picture and email me or bring in a print, you will recieve 5 points of extra credit that can be applied either this or next semester!
Today, through the help of an ArtPrize Education Travel Grant, I was able to take students to downtown Grand Rapids and view some of the most exciting works of art as a part of the 4th annual Art Competition. In addition to seeing great works of art that pushed our minds to seeing the world in a new way, students also got a chance to participate in the Education Day Chair Camp where they designed and created chairs as well as participated in a collaborative sculpture that will be on display near the UICA.

I am very excited to announce that we will be going to ArtPrize on September 24th, in downtown Grand Rapids. This annual field trip is one of my favorites to start the school year. Students interested in attending can print off the permission slip from this post and turn it in by Friday. I will be able to take between 40-50 students and will select those students during next weekend based on their essay and behavior in class. I am also in need of parent volunteers. If you are interested in helping, please contact me via email. As you can see from the poster for this year, they are using Op Art as inspiration for their logo. We study Op Art in 7th grade after creating our perspective drawings. Below are videos from last year's ArtPrize trip as well as some Op Art pieces from past BCWMS art students. I hope students take advantage of this opportunity to be a part of this great Grand Rapids art event! ArtPrize2011 from Janine Campbell on Vimeo.
Today 7th and 8th grade students were able to attend the Meijer Gardens to see the work of Deborah Butterfield, the butterflies, and the many sculptures by various artists that are on display.
It was a great time that was made possible do to a grant from the Michigan Council of Arts and Cultural Affairs. A HUGE THANKS to that organization whose funds made this possible! Today was shortened due to the fog delay. Students continued to work on their clay projects and I had the chance to get my part of the Visual Arts teacher show hung at the Van Singel Fine Arts Center. The work will be on display for the next month and will showcase the talents of the Visual Arts teachers at BCPS. In addition to hanging the work, I was also able to go to the Meijer Gardens to preview the Deborah Butterfield exhibit students will be seeing on the 27th of April. I was excited to see her work, the blooming flowers (which is crazy for this time of year), and the butterflies in the enclosed greenhouse area at the Sculpture Park. I love going to the Gardens and cannot wait to take students there again this year due to a grant awarded from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs! Our program was recently awarded a travel grant to visit the Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park on April 27th. Students participating in the trip will be selected based on their responses on the form attached to this post. Students interested will need to have the form filled out, signed, and returned to me by March 9th. Students accepted to go will be notified via email by March 17th.
8th grade students spent the day at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum to learn more about this Grand Rapids native. They also learned more about Benjamin Franklin and other aspects of U.S. History. 7th grade students worked in groups to create animations based on the concept of Surrealism. We will continue to work on the project throughout next week by adding sound and other effects. This project was featured as an honorable mention project for the Adobe Education Awards this past Fall.
8th grade students are finishing up the final upload of work onto Moodle before our long weekend for Thanksgiving break. Tomorrow I will be chaperoning the 8th grade field trip to the Ford Presidential Museum downtown, leaving today the last work day before the break. If students did not get their Artist Trading Cards done today, they are expected to work on them for homework and turn them into Moodle next Monday. We had an awesome time today at ArtPrize! BCPS students ruled the walkways as we interacted with art and artists all over the city of Grand Rapids. This was a great way to spend the day and we were lucky that the weather gave us such an enjoyable view of all the outdoor sites. You can see a video of our day here.
One of the highlights of today include working with Shawn Smith, whose work is on display at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. He creates sculptures that look like pixelated images. We also covered A LOT of the city and really tried to see as much as possible while we could. It was really great to talk with so many different artists and hear about how and why they made what they did. I enjoyed myself so much today, I even went back this evening for another round of viewing. I will probably be down again before the contest ends on October 9th. For students who did not get a change to attend with us, I am offering extra credit points if you take your picture in front of your favorite piece and bring me the picture to hang on my All About ArtPrize bulletin board. So, go out there and have fun - it is for school after all, right? The due date on the extra points is October 10th. As we get closer to the end of this school year, we also get closer to making serious decisions on next school year. During this sometimes difficult time I am happy that I spent the first Friday in May with my students at the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. Due to a grant awarded from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs as well as the Byron Center Fine Arts Boosters, 40 students from the middle and high school were able to attend a day long trip and learn about art and nature. Luckily, the weather was perfect! As you can see, the students got up close and personal with the large public sculptures on display and also enjoyed the exhibit of work by the Pop Art Icon, Jim Dine. Arts in our schools is an important component to an education and having opportunities like this grant gave allows students to see that art is everywhere. In a recent 2011 study by the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, the focus on that importance is demonstrated in the analysis of student improvement in schools when the arts were a central or integral part of the child's school day. When I take students to places like the Meijer Gardens, it makes me certain of it. Congrats to the 24 students selected to attend the Meijer Gardens Field Trip on May 6th.
It was a tough decision as many students applied to participate. If you were not selected, keep your eyes and ears open for other opportunities to participate in various art activities in the future. If you were selected, you would have recieved an email just moments ago from me with the good news! To check your mail, go to http://cloud.bcpsk12.net and use your school login ID and password to sign in. I am looking for 3-4 volunteers to help supervise the trip; if your parents or guardians are interested, please have them contact me. Thanks again to the funding provided by BCFAB and the Michigan Department for Arts and Cultural Affairs -- I look forward to sharing the work of Jim Dine with you guys and know it will be a beautiful day! |
