First Week Complete

9/7/2013

We had a great first week in the art room. We worked with clay, got to go outside, did some dancing, and even played a few games - it was a very eventful and fun way to start out the school year.

Students also created their social contract to help set the rules for the class and took their pre-test and survey to help me get a better sense of what they know and why they signed up for the class.

Some feedback I got from students in the Art Survey included the following comments along with what they want to learn in the class:
I like this class a lot. I didn't think I would because I signed up for it only to take STEM, and I have never liked art before. This class has been very fun for me.

I want to be a photographer when I get older.

I am very new to art, and would like to have a chance to learn as much as I can.

A few days ago, a teacher from Apex High School asked if any teachers had work they would like to see animated from their students. I immediately thought of our Exquisite Corpse assignment as being a fun image to see animated. I sent them the link to our Artsonia art gallery for them to select the images they wanted to work with. They did not disappoint - check out what the students from the Apex High School Arts program did with our student's drawings:

adding color

7th grade students worked on their modified blind contour drawings today by adding color to them with oil pastels. This is the first time I have taught this lesson this way and I think the students took great advantage of the mix-ability of the material to blend their colors and create a painterly effect.

Soon the work will be uploaded to Artsonia, but students will have to first use PhotoBooth, iPhoto, and Moodle to take, edit, and upload their work for me to publish.

8th grade students also added color to their work today by taking their section of the "Exquisite Corpse" game and adding colored pencil, crayon, or marker to it. It is always fun to see the zany drawings that result from the random add-ons that everyone takes part in by the time we are done rotating. I will be posting those to our gallery as soon as they are all turned in on Moodle, too.

7th grade students worked on creating multiple blind contour portraits today before adding their choice of material for color.
Students worked on finishing their drawings today. Although many are still in progress, we should be finished up by tomorrow.

Once they are done, students will take a picture of their work and upload it to Moodle. Students will also write an artist statement reflecting on their work and both the statement and art will be posted on Artsonia.

After students were finished putting their portfolios together, we moved onto some drawing games that got us up and moving.

7th grade students had a portrait party. They used blind contour drawing methods to observe and draw their peers. The result is very abstract and fluid. The room filled with laughter as soon as they revealed their drawings to each other and themselves.

8th grade students worked on their exquisite corpse drawings again today and selected with one they are interested in modifying.

Both groups will continue to work on the drawings Monday by adding color and more lines.

First day!

Today is the first day of school and we did our usual routine of getting down to work right away. Students used their first time back into my classroom as a way to create with clay and collaborate using an art game.

7th grade students worked on their clay pottery for empty bowls and 8th grade made pendants from clay and played the exquisite corpse game.

We will continue to work on these projects this week. This was a great first day and I am excited to do even more with my students tomorrow.

7th and 8th grade students enjoyed another day of creating as they were introduced to what the semester in Art class entails.

7th grade students put the finishing touches on their bowls from yesterday. Because the clay is now leather hard, students were able to smooth it out with clay tools and also engrave designs on it without having to worry about it collapsing.

8th grade students worked on making their portfolios and color coding them based on their class. Each class has a different color to help keep things organized. We reviewed organic and geometric shapes by having students create an organic shape on the right side to color with their class color and a geometric shape on the right to put their name and table number. 8th graders also worked on their Exquisite Corpse drawings by selecting an area to develop with more lines and color.

Exquisite Corpse from Janine Campbell on Vimeo.

Today we started classes with some art games and clay! 8th grade students watched the video created by students from last semester to see how to play the Exquisite Corpse game and 7th grade students made bowls for Empty Bowls.

This is going to be a great 2nd semester; if today has any indication, it will also be a very fun and creative time to share with you!

8th grade students finished their exquisite corpse game drawings. As soon as they finished, I uploaded the work to Artsonia and hung it on the wall. Students now need to write their artist statements by logging into Moodle and following the directions.
