Our school is going to be receiving a Potter's Wheel! I am so thankful to all of the parents, friends, and community members who donated (even my cat decided to get in on the action) - I am especially grateful to the Byron Center Fine Arts Boosters who matched donations and really sent the project over the edge. They also did a fantastic job getting the community involved through newsletters and postings.

This is the 4th project funded through DonorsChoose and the students were incredibly excited when they heard the news today. Now we want to pay it forward...

Our 5th Annual Empty Bowls event at WMS on March 21st from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Cafetorium. Bring any non-perishable food or money donation, receive a student made ceramic bowl and enjoy Soup and Bread provided by our local SUBWAY while you listen to awesome performances by our WMS Jazz Band, Choir, and Orchestra.

I am really excited at the response to our class project on Donors Choose over the past couple of days! We have received several donations towards obtaining a potter's wheel for our class and there is still time to help the project request get fully funded! We have 20 days left for funding to come in and if you use the code HEART when donating by tomorrow, your donation will be doubled.

I have been wanting a wheel for my classroom ever since I have started teaching.

I am super excited to announce that we have gotten our third project fully funded through DonorsChoose.org! Due to the generous support of donors from Michigan and beyond, 8th grade students will be learning to sew some awesome Monsters soon!

This sewing project was first taught last year as a result of a session I went to at the Michigan Art Education Association Conference last year. I saw the project and knew my students would do an awesome job with it (and of course they did, check out last year's project here). This year we can make them even more AMAZING with the funding provided from generous supporters of the arts! Thank you so much for your support and I cannot wait to get started with this project!

uploading work

7th grade students worked non-stop today to finish uploading their work from the week onto Moodle. In addition to their hallway drawings, where they used 1-point perspective, they also uploaded their pictures of the clay project featured in past posts.

It is so nice to see the work, all shining and bright, on display in the library for all to admire. I am hoping we will do our second sculpture project when we return from holiday break (but I am still a few panty hose short from making it happen and need some donations).

8th grade students are still working on their hallway drawings and uploading their clay bottles for a grade. They will finish up on Monday and then move onto making Artist Trading Cards for the March international show in Singapore.

Students are using the materials from the DonorsChoose project that was funded through the help of several generous donors!

Images of the cards and more work will be shortly finding a home on our online gallery on Artsonia, so keep a lookout for more!

two (more) good things to end the week

1. Vote for Brandon9154 on Artsonia for Artist of the Week. This is the second time we have had a student nominated this year (which is very exciting, since it is only the second month of school). You can vote daily until Sunday when we find out the winner.

2. The DonorsChoose project materials came in today! Inside the box is $250 worth of materials for students to use to create Artist Trading Cards to exchange with schools from other states and countries.

So far this year we have traded with Canada, and will be trading with Berlin shortly.

Thanks again to the generous donors who help fund this project!

The donors who gave to this project are from areas other than Byron Center and prove that there is such a thing as kindness from strangers!

Artist Trading Cards, mostly created by After School Art Students, are on their way to Ontario Canada!

Students are participating in this international exchange with students from East Eglin Secondary School and we are excited to see what we get in return. In other good news, our Artist Trading Card project is now fully funded on DonorsChoose! Thanks to New Jersey resident, Eliot, for his support and donation that helped us reach our goal. This project will help supply students with the materials needed to keep these type of exchanges going throughout the year!

We had a donation made to our project on DonorsChoose last night!

Thanks to Tina, from Royal Oak, we are only $30 away from reaching our goal and getting supplied to create Artist Trading Cards that will be swapped with schools from various locations around the US and World!
