The show will be coming down this week. But don't worry - there is an opportunity to see another BCPS show at the KISD in January as well as back in the Van Singel with all new work in May for the Spring k12 display!
Tonight was our annual December k12 district Art Show at the Van Singel Fine Arts Center. Not only was the weather perfect for driving out and viewing the masterpieces our students have made so far this year, it was also one of the best shows ever! The work was so strong from students k-12 and it was great to visit with students and parents as they got to see the progression of work. It was also very nice spending time with with the Art teachers I get to work with and share stories and ideas.

Check out the K-12 Show during December!Students selected and prepared work that they wanted on display for the BCPS Visual Arts show. The work will be on display for the month of December with an artists' reception on December 16th from 5:30-6:30. Every student in the 7th and 8th grade Visual Arts classes has a piece on display. The Van Singel Fine Arts Center is open daily from noon-5p.m.
Thank you to all of the parents and students who came out to BCWMS to participate in the Fine Arts Festival. It was a great night filled with Art and Music and could not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the students in our Fine Arts programs!
Now that our displays are coming to a close, please be on the look out for artwork making its way home. Students should be bringing home work as early as today. If something happens to the work as it makes it way home from school, remember that you can see the full array of projects on our online Artsonia gallery. The Van Singel Fine Arts Center is filled with student work and we are excited for the upcoming student reception this Friday from 5:30-6:30. Every Middle School student I have this semester has a piece on display. It is a great opportunity to celebrate the work and see the continuum of our Visual Arts program grades K-12.
7th and 8th grade students will have their work on display at the Van Singel Fine Arts Center through the month of May. This exhibit is in collaboration with the schools in our district k-12 grades. Based on an online discussion with a group of Art teachers, I decided to mix and match works together (instead of keeping them by project). The result is a fun and interesting display, where the various projects seem to communicate with one another on the wall. This is one of my favorite exhibits during the year and I am excited to see what all of the students from Byron Center Public Schools put on display!
Whenever I am visiting a new city, I always try and check out their art museum. I had the chance to visit the Denver Art Museum while in Colorado last week. When we first approached the building, I knew I was going to be in for a treat. The severe angles and large public art pieces made for a visually interesting piece of architecture on the outside. On the inside, the varying wall angles made for a different kind of display space. Who says walls have to be perpendicular to the floor anyway? My favorite part of any Art Museum is the contemporary wing. This place was no different. From Jim Dine to Sandy Skoglund, it was really a treat to be in such an interesting building filled with artists I knew and some that I am interested in knowing more about. One artist that really captured my attention was Tony Oursler. His piece Zero, shown below, was in a dark corner of the contemporary wing. It was bizarre to see this little doll in a suitcase, having a conversation with itself. It made my husband and I smile, laugh, and question. It did what art is supposed to do, change the way you look and think about things. Have you been to any good museums this summer? What new artists have made you rethink art? Please share any interesting art experiences as we start getting geared up for another school year!
I met Kim Westdorp at the TEDxLivestream event earlier this month. After quick introductions and a discovery that we both taught Art, she and I decided it would be fun to have our kids work together. Like an episode from the Art Contest Reality TV Show, "Work of Art," her students went through my students' online portfolios on Artsonia and selected a piece they wanted to re-imagine. Next Thursday those works, along with the inspiration images, will be on display at the Kent Career Technical Center. I am excited to see the work and look forward to doing this again in the future!
In addition to seeing all of the colorful art pieces on display, parents and students can also link to the QR codes to find even more work from our class in the genre being displayed. Each QR code links to our online gallery with a description of the project on display as well as other examples from the class. I am very excited about the art show tonight and look forward to using these codes in future exhibitions as well! Tonight was our 1-12th grade show at the Van Singel Fine Arts Center. It was a great time talking with parents and sharing student success with the community. The show is a great retrospective of the offerings at BCPS and offers students a chance to see how they can progress through the program at each building. Students are back to work today as we get back into the swing of things, finishing off the final 9 weeks of school before Summer break! Some students couldn't wait to return to school after Spring Break, showing off the work they accomplished while on vacation.
The piece above, by Marcus, was made out of push pins. This piece will be among many for the Spring Art Show at the Van Singel Fine Arts Center during the month of May. |
