8th grade students turned in their work using Moodle today. After uploading their art and writing a statement that will be posted on our Artsonia gallery, students used Moodle to access their next assignment.

Using Tagxedo, students are creating word clouds to help me get to know them. I love art that also uses text. I have been having a great time with the app WordFoto that does just that!

Digital Photography on Prezi

Today students decided they did not want to be done learning things for the school year, so they came into my classroom and learned basic ideas and concepts concerning digital photography. This is my second year teaching the Digital Art and Animation Camp and the 12 participates worked on taking and editing pictures today. We talked about the ideas in the slideshow above before going outside and putting the concepts into practice. After taking many pictures, students shared their favorites and learned some basic editing using Photoshop, Sumopaint, and Picture Manager.

Tomorrow we will talk about animation and use various digital and traditional methods to create a slew of projects to share!

I am always interested in using technology to extend lessons and enhance the creative process for students to try a lot of different things in a lot of different ways.

One way we are doing this is with the use of SumoPaint, an online free Photoshop-like program that allows you to make and manipulate images.

Students are exploring making more mandalas using several tools in the online program and as a result, explore the concept of the mandala and radial symmetry even more.

editing pictures and glazing bottles

7th grade students are going to be starting their portrait projects today.

Using the document provided below, students use digital cameras to take pictures of themselves in expressive ways before editing them in Photoshop and transfering the image into a drawing.

Next week, students will add value and tissue paper to these portraits. These mixed-media masterpieces are always successful and I look forward to seeing their creation!

Students in 8th grade are completing their portraits this week with the help of Photoshop.

They took pictures with our digital cameras and searched through tutorials on various websites before decided what they wanted to do to alter the images they made of themselves.

This project is a self-portrait and students are challenged to use the tools in Photoshop to create images that represent not only what they may look like, but also how they feel.

In the past two years we have had several students win recognition in various competitions for their pieces created from this project, including Katelyn's piece which is on display at the GRAM until March 10 for the Region 9 MAEA show.

One project that I look forward to teaching every year is the profile collage made with Photoshop.

Thanks to Art Educator Kris Fontes from Pennsylvania, I appropriated her lesson to use in my classroom.

Students find images from the web to fill their heads with the things that best represent their likes and interests of now. Check out the rest on our gallery at artsonia.

This project teaches students basic Photoshop editing skills as this is the first time most of them have ever used it before in class. It also allows me to learn more about my students and what they are interested in. It is a fun assignment that yeilds awesome outcomes (as you can see)!

Right now students are working on their Photoshop portraits in class and are doing all kinds of cool things to change their digital pictures.

If you do not currently own Photoshop at home and are waiting to buy the program, you can always try the free alternative: Sumo Paint

This program is an online based, open source, freeware program that allows you to upload images from your computer and edit them and save them back onto your computer.

It is a nice alternative to Photoshop (although it does not do everything Photoshop does) for those starting out and trying digital editing.

Students are working on their Photoshop projects this week and next!

For most students this is their first time using the program to edit pictures.

When I first learned how to use Photoshop, I was very confused and thought there was way too many things to know and learn before I could be "good" at it. After working with it for my own images and helping students with theirs as well as teaching it to others, I have found that it is one of my favorite media to manipulate!
