More Finished Work

Last week I pointed out that some students need a little more time to do their best work. Due dates in my classroom are firm, but flexible for those who would benefit from a little extra time. We need turn in dates to help hold students accountable, but we also need some ability to be flexible so that arbitrary dates do not hold back those who want to do something extra special.

It was exciting to see the following works find their way to the finish line this week. I am very excited for how they turned out, but probably even more so for the process in which each student found their way to the best possible solution. I appreciated reading their learning statements and how many hope these works will make their way into competition at some point this school year.
Picture
Oliver: In my artwork I was inspired by Julian Opie. But instead of doing a piece like his, I desisted to do the opposite of his art. I did a pencil and paper of a realistic face with lots of shadows. I used huge eye because Julian Opie's art has small beady eyes. My art relates to the theme of this project because it is of the "Me" in the project.
Picture
Leila: In this piece, I have a print of myself reaching for the stars. I literally took the saying, "Reach for the Stars", and incorporated myself. I decided to add wings to the figure to have a dreamy effect. I used newspaper that had been painted on for the feathers. For the stars, I opened up certain sections of the negative cardboard space and placed reflective material inside. I ripped parts of the cardboard off, so the piece would have a variety of different textures. In the end, this piece turned out really well and I hope to enter it in to Scholastic!
Picture
Mitchell: This piece has helped me learn how to use various techniques such a molding with plaster and clay and using many different colors to really help bring out my artwork. The art work connects to the theme of the project by symbolizing the ME in you me everybody, the project shows how my face can just be a plain piece of artwork but when you add different textures and visual elements such as unique indents into the clay and using a variety of colors you make or break a piece especially when it's clay.
Picture
Tess: This work focuses on the everybody piece of the project theme. It deals with the current political issue of whether or not football players should be allowed to kneel during the national anthem in protest of equal treatment for all people. I chose to use mixed media to create this piece. For the background, I used block printing, and for the rest of the work, I used cut paper. These materials help convey the message I am trying to communicate because they are bold, and simple, making the message heard.
Picture
Chloe: In this piece I used mixed media and for the background. I used different sponges and techniques to make the background look the way it does. And then the people are made out of black construction paper and I used a xacto knife to get a lot of little details of the peoples faces and hair. This piece ties in with the theme you, me, everybody because I focused in on the people who are really mean a lot to me and these people are my friends so I decieded to do everybody.
Picture
Marie: In this piece of art I chose to portray the idea of 'everybody' by using bottle caps and portraits. I intended that viewers would receive the message that everyone is different, and in a world of differences it is important that we find our own way to stand out. To help push this theme I placed one portrait out of place that had a different background, and a different skin color. By using bottle caps and randomized paint colors, I hoped to communicate this same idea of everyones differences. But by placing them all together, I hope to show viewers that we can come together as a community to create something bigger than our differences.

Building Skills and Understanding

Students were introduced to our next Challenge Theme: Spaces and Places (real or imagined). We looked at the work of Vincent Van Gogh, Ansel Adams, Georgia O'Keeffe, David Hockney, and Nathan Walsh before starting out plans for possible ways in which students could explore ideas surrounding the places we visit.

It was fun to see students dive into the sketchbooks right away and start planning out ideas without hesitation. The work we did for our first challenge has helped spark the importance of thinking through ideas and trying out various approaches in a smaller format before making a commitment on a larger scale. This shows me that students are able to generate ideas on their own, do the research they need to help inform their choices, and try out solutions before making a choice on what interests them most.

We also used this week to broaden our skills with various mini-challenges using collaged paper and digital works. Students learned about how to establish an environment by activating the foreground, middle ground, and background of a work as well as how to use various tools to achieve desired effects. It was fun to see students use these skill-builders as a springboard for generating ideas for their project and the results of their learning.

Landscape Fast Collage Challenge

Students created the following landscape collages to demonstrate their understanding of foreground, middle ground, and background while also using collage skills to complete a work. We started out by looking at The Art Assignment Video featuring landscape artist Robyn O'Neill before getting out the glue and scissors and getting to work.

What made this a successful challenge was that the size of these collages were kept to 6x4 inches big and students only had about 25 minutes to create them. Students sometimes struggled with the limited size and time, but by keeping it small they had to forget about being perfect with their choices and focus on demonstrating the various aspects of a landscape as well as the figure/ground relationship. Some enjoyed the process so much, they made more for fun.

Photoshop Challenge 2

Students were given another Photoshop Challenge to complete this week as well. These works help build students skills while producing works they are proud of and that they were able to have a say in making. It has been fun to see some students really grow their understanding of how to digitally manipulate images and how to make images from scratch, rather than always relying on the internet.

Here are several examples to show the range of methods in which students created works to demonstrate their understanding of creating visual space while manipulating the methods and tools within Photoshop.

Almost The End of the Quarter

With the end of first quarter next week, it has been such a delight to see students grow and shape their understanding of art in new ways. Students have been exposed to a variety of artists, methods, and tools to use as a starting point for their own creative journeys. I am excited to see this quarter come to a close and how students leverage their learning from this quarter to push themselves even more next!

ArtPrize 2017

Picture
As another week of ArtPrize 9 was in full swing, so was our excitement to be a part of it. For those of you not familiar with the competition, it is a 19 day annual event in Grand Rapids that really begins much earlier in the year with creating work and connecting with a venue.

This year was the first year that a Youth Collaboration Award was offered, which was the incentive for us to pull something together rather quickly last spring. We almost did not make it in, though. It was not until the last day of venue connections that we found ours in Monroe Community Church. We are so thankful they took a chance on us and the response to our display has been amazing!

Students this week were especially thrilled when our work showed up over the course of several days on local news because our venue was named by the Jury Shortlist as a Most Outstanding Venue finalist. Even though our work may not win the $5000 grant for the Youth Collaboration, being a part of a venue to receive this kind of recognition makes us feel like we won.

When we came up with this concept to create a work that was a visual response to standardized testing due to the timing in which is was made, the goal was to make something that went beyond cliche kid art. We wanted to make something that we could put up in our school as art in and of itself. I think we did that and I am very proud of the response we have gotten for it.

Names Complete

I have a hard time with remembering names and I share with my students that as a visual learner, it helps me to learn something when I am able to see it connected with an image. This introductory project not only does that, but it also helps me learn about my students and what interests them most. It is fun to see how they approach this challenge and the variety in solutions as well as rationale behind the visual choices they make to complete it.
Picture
Kaylynn: In this piece I used objects and colors that I enjoy to spell out my name. For example for my L I used a lighthouse because I enjoy going to the beach. This project was a really great way to show who I am as a person in the form of art.
Picture
Cooper: Everything in the name Is something i like c is for the game rocket league the 2 o's are a soccer ball and the chrome symbol, the p is for science the e if for one of my favorite numbers 1,111 and the r is a alligator, my favorite animal.
Picture
Anna: What inspired me to draw in this style and what to draw for each letter came from what I love and what I care about. I love to go to Anna Maria Island which is my A, and I love art which is why I did that for N, I love plants and succulents which inspired to do that for N, and last I love to be happy and I love rainbows so thats why I did that for my last A.
Picture
Logan: I love this project, I chose all my letters based on scooting. It my favorite thing ever. The L is a scooter, The O is a brand that sells scooter parts.(outset select) The G is a brand also that sells scooter parts. (proto scooters) the orange things are allen wrenches. and the A is a wheel. The N is a rail for grinding on with the scooter.

Photoshop Challenge 1

In addition to finishing up their names this week, students also learned some new skills on Photoshop by selecting a level (beginner, intermediate, advanced) and completing a tutorial within that level. It was nice to see students use their technology to advance their skills and try something new. Here are some of the results:

Overall, this past week was pretty exciting. It was so incredible to see our work on the news, learn more about my students, and see my students try new ideas using technology.

I am very excited to learn about the ArtPrize results later this week and everything else that is planned with my students!

Three to go

STEAM Collaborations

The STEM teacher and I decided that simply one more collaboration was not enough for our students, so we did a JAM PACKED week and a half that included three! It was a perfect way to finish our last collaborations as a group and release some creative energy during State Testing.

Here are some of the results:

#1: Mandala Madness

When we plan out our collaborations, we want to make sure students are getting equal parts Art and STEM. This Mandala collaboration really is one of the most perfect blends we have found and offers a chance for everyone to help out.

First students get into groups of four and learn about various ways cultures have used radial design as a strategy to communicate ideas. After we look at some examples of various designs, students fold and cut their own mandala, using the fold lines as their lines of symmetry to transfer the design so it is symmetrical throughout their piece.
Picture
After students completed their designs, we went outside to translate them into LARGE replicas with chalk. I happened to be sick on the day we did this, but my students made sure to turn in images of their work. Here are a few:

Students also explored radial symmetry through digital means using Sumopaint and Photoshop.

#2: Piskels to Legos

Picture
In the spirit of translating images from one platform to another, students created images using the online program PiskelApp and then recreated them on our Lego Board! This Lego Board and the Lego pieces were purchased through a DonorsChoose project earlier in the year and funding from The Byron Center Fine Arts Boosters.

It was an awesome use of materials and it was fun to see all of the different creatures and creations students came up with to add to the board. This was our first time doing this collaboration and only had about a day to complete it. I think we will do some other really cool things with the Lego board in the future based on this experience.

#3: ArtPrize Youth Collaboration

Picture
Inspired by my trip to The Lab School in Washington, D.C. for The Power of Art Conference, I knew I wanted to do a large collaborative with students that would ultimately hang in our library. The new Youth Collaboration Award offered by ArtPrize was just the incentive to get something done by the end of the year and we hope we are able to connect with a venue in order to have it as a part of this year's competition.

The above video walks you through the five day process students went through to create this colorful work. First, students looked at the combines of Robert Rauschenberg and used his application of paint to inform their approach to attaching the canvas by making marks using a variety of tools. I was able to use donated paint from X-rite that was given to us a couple of years ago for this and a variety of paint brushes, sponges, texture tools, yarn, and stamps for applying it to the three 4x8ft foam boards. Even some teachers and our Assistant Principal got in on the action. They were simply encouraged to make marks and attack the surface (I had a great painting teacher in college who would say the same to me).

Then students were shown some images by Caledonia Curry and how she uses printmaking and cut patterns on paper to create collaged and layered works. We used the idea of paper cutting to create a series of portraits of students from our school (some of the images were from photos I had taken for the yearbook and others were from students own images) and various circle patterns. Students worked in pairs for this and it was fun to see the patterns and faces emerge as they cut into the colorful pieces of paper.

Once that was complete, we worked together to arrange the cut outs on top of the painted background until it seemed to look "right." Using Modge Podge and sponge brushes, they were sealed on top of the surface.

The end result is bright and colorful and reflective of the wonderful chaos that is both the end of the year and frequently in my Middle School Art room. I think we are pretty much finished (although we may add in some Sharpie outlines in the background - we are still debating this). We have until June 22nd to connect with a venue so our work can be a part of the ArtPrize Youth Collaboration Award consideration.

Here are some more GIFs from students last week.

In order to create these moving masterworks, students first went to the Artsonia galleries of our elementary schools. After selecting which image they would like to animate. They copied and pasted the work into a new Photoshop image. Using the quick selection tool, the clone stamp, and the motion workspace, students navigated between layers to create looping images. To save the files so they will move once they are uploaded online, students went to file>save for web and then save the GIFs to turn in on Schoology for a grade.

Overall, it has been really fun to see students learn this method and the amount of interest in turning other student's works into something new.

It was a perfect feeder lesson into our final project, "Something Old, Something New," which we also started this past week.

All of the above images are from the same student artist.

Before I say too much about that, I want to do a small recap of why I was out of my classroom the end of last week. I had the honor of attending and presenting at the National Art Education Convention in Chicago!

It was great fun to share, learn, and create with 5,500 of my closest friends... ComiCon was also at the conference center, which made for even more fun!

Here are some images of my time in Chicago, learning and sharing:
It is always tough to be away from the classroom. Figuring out meaningful plans for a non-art person (or anyone who isn't me) is a challenge. Luckily, I didn't need to clone myself because I had some sure-fired Photoshop Challenges ready for the kids to tackle.

Some created Graffiti names and placed them on buildings:

Some students redrew the hall, using perspective and the pen tool:

Others decided to create some out of this world environments:

And some made their own landscapes using different brushes:

And then there is Matthew. Matthew decided to really dig into Photoshop and take his skills to the next level by searching out tutorials and experimenting with a variety of tools to create the above three images and the following three:

Having a Sub Doesn't Have to Stink

2/17/2016

If you were to ask me about planning for a substitute teacher early in my teaching career, I would probably groan and explain that it is often MORE work to put together sub plans than to be in the classroom. I would look at the day away and know that whatever I put together was a throw-away lesson or might end in a mess because many substitutes (no fault of their own) are not trained in the magic of Art education.

Since the implementation of Schoology and empowering students to be their own sources of creation through choice, I am not as worried as I once was about losing a day of instruction when I happen to be out of my classroom. Using Youtube tutorials, step-by-steps, as well as giving students options, I know they will be engaged in the work when I am gone.

Since many of these students have never used Photoshop before, I decided to have their first Photoshop Challenge involve various portrait options. That way they can see the overlap between this injected activity and their current project theme. Some of them have even expressed interest in changing their media of focus since they now have an idea of what can be done when using Photoshop.

Students uploaded their completed images to Artsonia, but here are a few highlights from what was completed with the substitute teacher yesterday:
Picture
Samantha: While creating this piece through photoshop I used many different tools. I think that the tool I used the most was the crop tool. I used this tool for every single picture to delete the white around the picture. I also used the paint bucket to create the background and I adjusted my layers by using the drag arrow tool. All of the objects shown in this creation mean something to me for example. The dog at the top represents my dog Mia that I love so so much. The disney tsum tsum's represent me because I am a Disney mega fan. I also included a picture of my favorite animal, foods, and I also included pictures of dancers, their shoes and their awards because I have been dancing since I was 3. That is what is included within my picture.
Picture
Justin: In this piece I put my favorite place to eat, my favorite sports, my favorite team, and my country. I put these items into my head because they resemble me. In the background I put dashes leading towards my face to use the rule of thirds.
Picture
Avery: What I did to create this was I opened up this picture and then I opened up iPhoto and drag and dropped the picture on a new layer and did "command t" to make it the size of the paper. I then used the overlay settings and saved it in JPEG to my desktop. I chose to do this because not only can you see things with your eye but also with all if you, it ties in with make the unseen seen because it shows that you can see things with more than just you eye.
Picture
Ella: My artwork uses different layers of pictures to create an allusion that she is in the sky, opening a keratin. I like how the certain is opening like she is looking into a new world of wonder. You can think of anything and make it look real and thats what iI did in my photoshop challenge.
Picture
Noah: This project was a little frustrating. Photoshop didn't work for a little while, and I have not really ever done Photoshop. I tried to make it look 3 dimensional by lowering the opacity of some of my pictures more than others. Due to the low opacity of the of the images, they took mostly the color of the abstract background I created.

Challenge Winners!

One of the things I like about teaching art is that learning is visible. Students show you what they know through the works they make, manipulating media to say things that could never be said with words.

I used to teach Photoshop in a very traditional manner. I would be at the front of my classroom and walk students step-by-step, until we all basically had the same type of image at the end. That would then be the project and we would move onto the next thing.

Now that I have moved my classroom into a Thematic Unit structure, I was struggling with how to still teach Photoshop skills in a way that I would be able to see if students understood the skills.

That is where the Photoshop Challenges have come into play. Instead of these exercises being a specific project, I grouped together a set of similar types of mini-lessons that relate to the current theme we are working on in class. They are organized with video tutorials (usually of me) and step-by-steps for students to get a better understanding of how the tools can be used in their other theme-based images if they so choose to use this as a medium.

Students were asked to complete one from each set of three, but these two students did all six, which makes them the Photoshop Challenge Champions. Their prize is a fun eraser making kit.

Working on Spaces and Places

10/30/2015

This week we transitioned from thinking about what makes us who we are to exploring the places we inhabit. With the theme Environment, Space, or Place in mind, students examined various works by artists throughout history before coming up with their own ideas on how they wanted to tackle the topic.

One resource we used to help us along the way was this video from The Art Assignment.
In addition to this video, which explored the importance of the figure/ground relationship, we also did some demonstrations on one and two-point perspective, color mixing, as well as a few Photoshop Challenges that explored how you can create the illusion of space. It was fun to see students

Here are some of those works:

Spacescapes

I can never thank Ian Sands enough for sharing this tutorial online. It has helped me in so many sick-day situations and I have continued to use it as a quick and easy tutorial to get kids to understand that Photoshop can be used for more than Google grabbing and pasting.

Graffiti Name

This is a very easy lesson on how to make your name on Graffiti Creator, screen shot it, and place it on something else in Photoshop.

Photoshop Hallway

This exercise helps students understand how they can use the pen tool in Photoshop and also demonstrates the use of perspective in a digital way.

It has been really rewarding to see students go through processes and select the materials and ideas that they want to explore with this theme in mind. I have had to do a little more conferencing with this theme, though, to get kids to dig a little deeper and go beyond the basic landscape.

Here are some images of our process so far:
To coordinate with our theme (and celebrate Halloween), I dressed up as Bob Ross today. It was fun to see the reaction of students and teachers alike!

When I Was Gone

10/20/2015

Today was the first day back in my classroom since last Thursday. I was busy presenting to teachers at the MAEA Conference in Grand Rapids as well as student teachers at Aquinas College on Monday.

Even though I was away learning and sharing ideas with other educators, I knew my students would be hard at work in the classroom thanks to our use of Schoology, Camtasia, and Scholastic Art Magazine.

As I often do when a sub comes to my room, I shift art-making activities to a material that is less messy in nature: Photoshop. Since we are working with the theme of Identity, I pooled together the resources I have compiled from over the years that seemed to lend itself to exploring those ideas. I am a believer in giving students choices, which is why they had three of them: Profile Collage, Exquisite Corpse, or Making the Unseen Seen. If students wanted to, they could do all three.

Here are examples from each of the choices.

Profile Collage

Picture
Christina: I decided to make a profile collage for my photoshop challenge. I used many tools to create this. A couple of the many tools I used were the gradient tool for the background and I also used a profile picture of myself and took the selection tool and deleted to rest of the background. The pictures that I have chosen to use for my picture are things that I like and I also added my name which was inspired from the video showing all the steps to create this. I also chose not to crop out the background to each picture because I like the lines that make it more clean.
Picture
Kolton: One basic tool that i used for this collage is the Quick selection tool. This tool allowed me to select the background of the image and therefor delete it in order save room and show the image i really wanted instead of the background. Another tool that i used in this collage is the Move tool. The Move Tool allowed my to drag and place the image after it was cropped into the spot i wanted it to be placed in. Also in a way in order to conserve room so i could fit the images i wanted into the collage. The meaning behind the images that i chose was the basketball, and football represents my passion of sports. Also the MSU, Lions, and Tigers sign shows my teams that i cheer for. Lastly the remaining pictures show the food and resteraunts that i love and love to eat at with family.

Exquisite Corpse

Picture
Jewel: It was very interesting using Photoshop once again. To be honest, I'm not terribly great at Photoshop but I am actually pretty proud of this piece. I used My face, Dylan O' Brien's face and Arden Cho's faces to create this girl in the photo. I had a lot of fun making this piece until my who thing deleted by accident, now I know better and need to save my artwork! My favorite part of "Drifting Slowly" is definitely the hair. I love the texture and balance of different colors I used, exploring different features in Photoshop.
Picture
Nick: To make this exquisite corpse, I used the element of color. I tried to use colors in the body to make it the most realistic. However, I created the background with many different bright colors. I also used the principle of pattern to create this piece. In the background, the different colors are in different patterns. For example, there are patterns of lines created by different colors. Finally, I used the element of shape to create this. Many different, odd shapes were used to create his head and face. I also used a few shapes in the background.

Making the Unseen Seen

Picture
Corrine: n the background photo, I took it on my way to school one day, and the focus was great, and I knew it would be a great photo for this project. Next, the bird silhouette was found on Google under "labeled for reuse" under search tools, so I am allowed to use it. In Photoshop, I made the silhouette transparent and put it on top of the farm image. This is my finished product, and I am proud of it.
Picture
Denver: created this image by placing picture of my family and things I have seen. Then I overlaid them all and it created this, a mountain of bright colors and things that are apart of me. It created something beautiful something that is in my head all the time. This shows a partial part of it. The texture is my favorite part. It makes it look ruff and emotional, but also makes it soft and sweet.

Notans, Two Ways

4/11/2015

Before we left for Spring Break, 7th grade students worked with the Japanese concept of light and dark harmony through paper cut and digital Notans. It was fun to see the students work with the concept in two mediums and have them compare the work and processes. Here are a few from the group, but you can find them all on our Artsonia gallery.

Paper Notans:

For the paper Notans, students used a 4x4 inch black paper and cut out shapes that would then be opened like a mirror from the side. They were asked to cut shapes from all four sides and use a glue stick to secure it to their white background.
Picture
Aaron: In this piece of art I made the shapes in a unique way that I thought was cool. Some of the shapes I made were influenced by my surroundings and I also used some of the designs in the video that we watched.
Picture
Kasey: I created a Asymmetrical and Symmetrical design using black and white colors. I wanted to create a different and funky design. So used more organic shape then geometry shapes.
Picture
Denver: When I was creating this piece I was thinking of fire and the way it burns thats why it has a sharp fire like edge to it. And for the smoke the circles and waves represent that. Also in this pice i added a trapezoid to show a mountain along with the mountain like shape in the circle. This makes it seem like the fire is on a mountain or something. this piece may seem like nothing at first but when you look at it more and think about it, it seems to have a story.

Digital Notans:

For the digital Notans, students were asked to use work from their Artsonia portfolio and alter it in Photoshop with the use of the lasso tool and some other editing tricks.
Picture
Jewel: During the creation of this art piece, I used the lasso tool in photoshop to cut and paste into a digital notan. My favorite piece of this artwork is the eye on the other side of the face.
Picture
Matthew: I made this notan by using the lasso tool on photoshop. This made it so I could select a part of the image and flip it so it turned out to be a notan like the paper ones we made in class.
Picture
Jordan: For this Notan, I used the lasso tool in photoshop. I took an image from my own profile on artsonia, and I made it into a Notan. It was really easy, and as I went, it got cooler and cooler. I really like this artwork because it has a lot of color and design.
