Exquisite Corpse from Janine Campbell on Vimeo. Today we started classes with some art games and clay! 8th grade students watched the video created by students from last semester to see how to play the Exquisite Corpse game and 7th grade students made bowls for Empty Bowls.

Students involved with the After School Art Program have been working with a variety of materials this year so far. Since this class allows students to select their materials and subjects in their pursuit of making art, students are given the freedom to pursue their interests and express themselves creatively. From participating in the National STEM Video Game Design Competition to create prints and portraits in clay, students have worked on creating many art objects during their time after school daily. 8th grade students are finishing up the final upload of work onto Moodle before our long weekend for Thanksgiving break. Tomorrow I will be chaperoning the 8th grade field trip to the Ford Presidential Museum downtown, leaving today the last work day before the break. If students did not get their Artist Trading Cards done today, they are expected to work on them for homework and turn them into Moodle next Monday. 7th grade students worked non-stop today to finish uploading their work from the week onto Moodle. In addition to their hallway drawings, where they used 1-point perspective, they also uploaded their pictures of the clay project featured in past posts. It is so nice to see the work, all shining and bright, on display in the library for all to admire. I am hoping we will do our second sculpture project when we return from holiday break (but I am still a few panty hose short from making it happen and need some donations). 8th grade students are still working on their hallway drawings and uploading their clay bottles for a grade. They will finish up on Monday and then move onto making Artist Trading Cards for the March international show in Singapore. Students are using the materials from the DonorsChoose project that was funded through the help of several generous donors! Images of the cards and more work will be shortly finding a home on our online gallery on Artsonia, so keep a lookout for more! 7th and 8th grade students GAP'ed (sort work into good, average, and poor piles) from their portfolio's today and put out their clay projects for display in the Media Center. Keep your eyes peeled for them to be posted on Artsonia within the next week! Students will be selecting work for display be the end of November for the upcoming Van Singel Fine Arts Center 1-12 show.
From creating comics, to finishing up glaze, students are working hard to get their various ideas and concepts communicated through the use of visuals. Students will be done glazing tomorrow and drawing comics by the end of this week and ready to move onto perspective drawing.
One of my goals this year is to do a better job of documenting the process students go through when they are creating a work of art. Whenever there is an art show, you only see the final step of the journey and not the path that got each student to that point. So, here is a first (out of many, hopefully) that captures the process of creating the clay projects from last week. Once the projects are fired, students will get a chance to enhance with color and embellishments. Thanks again to the Byron Center Fine Arts Boosters for their support in purchasing the clay for these projects! 7th and 8th grade students finished up their clay bottles and creatures on Friday. Now, they need to dry, get fired, and glazed. Although it was a dusty week in the Art room, with plenty of clay being dolled out (we went through about 300 lbs), it was well worth it. Thank you to the Byron Center Fine Arts Boosters, whose support make our clay projects possible. Without additional funding from this important parent group, this project would not have been possible! If you would like to get involved with BCFAB, please attend the next parent meeting on October 24th in the High School Choir room at 7 p.m.
7th and 8th grade students are starting to add details to their clay creations. We will be working on this project throughout the rest of the week, and again when the clay forms come out of the kiln as bisque and ready to be glazed.
Students continued to work with clay today. We are using armatures in 8th grade to maintain the shape of the bottle. Students are using water bottles for this and as you can see, it allows them to mold and shape without hurting the integrity of the structure. I think this project is one of my favorites because we can use clay to express different aspects of our emotions or personalities. I really enjoy seeing the creative results when we finish. Stay tuned for a video I am producing about this project and the 7th grade clay project, too! |
