7th grade students are going to be starting their portrait projects today. Using the document provided below, students use digital cameras to take pictures of themselves in expressive ways before editing them in Photoshop and transfering the image into a drawing. Next week, students will add value and tissue paper to these portraits. These mixed-media masterpieces are always successful and I look forward to seeing their creation!
Students finished their Doodle4Google entries today. The theme this year is "What I'd like to do someday..." From traveling to space or becoming a great chef, the illustrations are fun and colorful. See all of them here. The winner of this contest will be awarded a scholarship, computer, and trip to NYC! Let's wish our BCWMS students much luck! I am proud to say that I have three students whose work has been featured in April's issue of SchoolArts magazine! Last December, we sent in Artist Trading Cards to the 5th Annual ATC competition and on page 12, you can see that Adam recieved an honorable mention! If you click on the image and go to page 32, you can read about the Greek Scratch Art project I do with 7th grade students in conjunction with their Social Studies classes and see Jordyn and Tena's work as examples. I am very excited to have my lesson plan and student work showcased in this magazine. I read it regularly to get new ideas for my class. Who knows, maybe I will submit another article soon?!?! Students are starting their Doodle4Google competition entries today. The theme for this year's doodle is "What I'd like to do someday..." Students are currently brainstorming what they would like to do and then drawing thumbnail sketches of their aspirations before starting their finals. From large scale goals of living on the moon, to the more simplistic want of planting a garden, students are choosing all kinds of images to show what they would like to do someday. Keep checking in to see the results! The deadline for turning in completed entries is next week. For additional forms or informations, please click on the image. If you are interested in spending more than just an afternoon in the summertime making art, consider going to Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. This 11 day camp offers many opportunities for students to work with the Visual Arts materials of their choice as they explore nature and make friends with others in their age group. The dates of the camps range from the end of June to the middle of August, with four camp sessions to choose from. If you would like to recieve a scholarship for attendance, you may do so with a recommendation from me along with filling out this application. BCFAB also helps provide camp scholarships to Arts students. See the below document for more information!
And I blame pictionary! Yesterday was a day off for us and not only did I enjoy some time to sleep in and organize my art supplies, I also enjoyed having a few friends over for a game of Pictionary on the Wii. I love board games and playing against friends often leads to much laughter - especially when it comes to drawing. It was a great time and I am thankful that Ms. Villar loaned this to me for the night! If you are interested in playing a drawing game online, check out isketch. 8th grade students finished their Photoshop Portraits today and turned them in for a grade. .It was great to see the amount of color and expression students used to show something about their personality and interests. I was also inspired to create an image based on something I learned from a student. I used this tutorial that the student found and adapted it to create my own image. It was really fun to do! Students in 8th grade are completing their portraits this week with the help of Photoshop. They took pictures with our digital cameras and searched through tutorials on various websites before decided what they wanted to do to alter the images they made of themselves. This project is a self-portrait and students are challenged to use the tools in Photoshop to create images that represent not only what they may look like, but also how they feel. In the past two years we have had several students win recognition in various competitions for their pieces created from this project, including Katelyn's piece which is on display at the GRAM until March 10 for the Region 9 MAEA show. One project that I look forward to teaching every year is the profile collage made with Photoshop. Thanks to Art Educator Kris Fontes from Pennsylvania, I appropriated her lesson to use in my classroom. Students find images from the web to fill their heads with the things that best represent their likes and interests of now. Check out the rest on our gallery at artsonia. This project teaches students basic Photoshop editing skills as this is the first time most of them have ever used it before in class. It also allows me to learn more about my students and what they are interested in. It is a fun assignment that yeilds awesome outcomes (as you can see)! |
