Since transitioning my classroom into a TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behavior) or choice based model, I have seen a variety of media being selected to illustrate the concept of Identity. Check out the progress below:

This week is flying by as students start working on their various projects and sharing their thoughts on Artists throughout history via Schoology. Here is an overview of some of the things we have been working on for the past few days: Pre-Tests and Portfolio NamesDesign Thinking in ActionPortrait Party I am completely overjoyed with the progress students are making in art class! In just the three days we have worked with clay, painted, made portfolios, and implemented our sketchbooks as a part of the creative process! This is the first year I have used sketchbooks as a tool in my classroom. In the past, I had students use newsprint or other scrap paper. This year I worked with our STEM teacher, Mr. Dennett to implement the use of sketchbooks as a part of the design process in both of our classes (since we share students throughout the year). Using design thinking to develop a process, we were inspired by this chart (which I can no longer find the link to): 7th and 8th grade students are using this process to come up with solutions for their portfolio names. It is interesting to see what they come up with and how they work it out in their sketchbooks before applying it to their portfolio. Sketchbooks are an exciting tool to use in the classroom and I am excited to see how my students utilize the space to generate and work through their ideas. Here is a great video on using sketchbooks to help with learning how to draw: For the past two weeks, students in both 7th and 8th grade classes had a lot of decisions to make as they worked through their projects. 7th grade students focused on story-telling as they worked on creating videos, video games, or comics. 8th grade students worked with form as they decided what to create with paper. You can see all of the results on our online gallery, but here is a peek into the process below: Other students created their videos for the Meijer Great Choices Video Competition to focus on Healthy Choices, Character, or Diversity. 7th and 8th grade students continue to work on finishing up projects started last week. Students are working on their personality name tags for the front of their portfolios as well as adding color to the pieces of art started last week in class.
7th grade is working on their Modified Blind Contour Drawings and 8th grade is working on their Exquisite Corpse Drawings. We also spent some time on their compositional pre-test, where they expressed what they know about Art though a drawing. I also loaded the kiln full of their clay creations from last week and plan to fire it up in the next day or two so we can start glazing at the end of the week. Students have been busy this week! We finished the Zentagle Animal project, taught by Ms. Scheele (our student assistant from Aquinas), experimented with some plaster casting, and then started a new portrait project inspired by contemporary artists. It has been a fun week filled with discovery! Plaster Casting from Janine Campbell on Vimeo. 7th and 8th grade students are working are working on perspective drawing this week. And as usual, I am thinking about how other artists have used it in their work. Instead of visual, check out how this musician used the concept of perspective in their video below. Plus, it is a pretty catchy tune. 7th grade students worked on their modified blind contour drawings today by adding color to them with oil pastels. This is the first time I have taught this lesson this way and I think the students took great advantage of the mix-ability of the material to blend their colors and create a painterly effect. Soon the work will be uploaded to Artsonia, but students will have to first use PhotoBooth, iPhoto, and Moodle to take, edit, and upload their work for me to publish. 8th grade students also added color to their work today by taking their section of the "Exquisite Corpse" game and adding colored pencil, crayon, or marker to it. It is always fun to see the zany drawings that result from the random add-ons that everyone takes part in by the time we are done rotating. I will be posting those to our gallery as soon as they are all turned in on Moodle, too. Students finished up in the hall today with their drawings. 7th grade started uploading their work to Moodle and 8th grade will be doing that part tomorrow. It is always fun to see how students use the principles of perspective to draw what they see. I think they did a really nice job with this project and I look forward to seeing what the 7th grade students animate in their hall when we get started with that project! Students continue to work in the hallways this week as they draw from observation. I am excited that some are selecting new views of the hall, never before tried. Several students in 1st hour are giving a try at the cafetorium, which is proving to be a great space to draw. Reid also received his plaque and gift card from Artsonia today! Thanks to everyone who voted and helped him win Artist of the Week! This was a fun way to start Monday and this week should be filled with fun as we also get ready for the 8th grade Lewis and Clark expedition outside on Thursday! Remember to dress warm that day and be prepared for lots of learning, fun, and hopefully no rain or snow this year! |
