The show is a great retrospective of the offerings at BCPS and offers students a chance to see how they can progress through the program at each building.
Tonight was our 1-12th grade show at the Van Singel Fine Arts Center. It was a great time talking with parents and sharing student success with the community.

8th grade students are finishing their monsters before moving onto their comics that use the monsters as the main characters. We are using this article to help us get in the mode of telling a story through pictures.
8th graders are also getting geared up for their final video projects on the artists and materials we have studied throughout the semester. This project will help them get ready for their final exams. Today, my After School Art students were delighted to receive the box of Artist Trading Cards from a partnering school in North Carolina. I met Nicole Kirkpatrik on a social networking site for Art Teachers and she and I arranged for our students to exchange these transportable masterpieces with each other. This arrival prompted many "oohhhs" and "aaahhhhs" from the students, as well as the inspiration to make even more (trying to figure out how the Dunn Middle School students did theirs). Last night was the Region 9 awards reception for students and their families at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. It was also a time to see friends and beautiful works created by young artists from around West Michigan. I also enjoyed the Robert Rauschenberg exhibit filled with bright, colorful prints from this iconic artist. Check out the video below for just a few of the reasons why students should consider signing up for this class when entering the Middle School! I know it seems kind of crazy to be even thinking about summertime, but it is only a few months away - so, for those of you still wondering what you are going to do with all of that time away from school, consider taking an art class! There are several opportunities around the West Michigan and Grand Rapids Area for Art camps and Art classes that you can explore. Each week I will feature one that you might enjoy checking out. For this week, consider taking a Camp class at the GRAM.

The Dallas Cowboy's stadium is not only the site of yesterday's major football event, but it is also home to 19 contemporary artists works of art. It is a wonderful thing to see the world of art and sports collide in this spectacular stadium.
8th grade students started their Anthropomorphic pottery projects today by wrapping their bottles in clay. Using the slab roller and other clay tools purchased as a result of the grant awarded from the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids, students were able to cover their bottles with even sheets of clay as we prepare to transform them into vessels that show the personality of the artist who made it. This semester is focused on the concept of identity in art and how artists throughout history have used this theme in their work. I look forward to seeing how these plain bottles turn into lively representations of the students who are making them. The annual West Michigan Regional Scholastic Art Awards ceremony was held today at St. Celicia's Music Society with a reception following at Kendall College of Art and Design. BCPS had 20 students receive awards at this years even and the gold key winners will go onto the National Competition in NYC. The National Scholastic winners will be announced in April. "The Blob Adventures: Part 1, " an animation by Matthew Z, Tyler D, and Matt E, will represent BCWMS this year. I love this time of year and this event that celebrates the talents and imaginations of our kids! |
