looking for peace

As we remember the lives lost ten years ago, there is little we can do to change what happened on that tragic day.

Even though we cannot change or control the events of that fateful day, we can control how we remember the lives lost and the way we react to hate in the world.

When I first heard of the 10 days of Peace, I wanted to know more. The idea is that we use the days that bridge the tragic anniversary of 9/11 and International Peace Day on 9/23 to focus on peace and how we can do our part to help peace thrive.

In History, students are participating in Pinwheels for Peace as a part of this initiative and are using the power of Art to create an installation around our memorial tree in from the school with the pinwheels that are created. Students involved in After School Art will also contribute to this effort.

social contract

Students used Moodle to create the social contract for our class. A social contract is an agreement between students and their teacher about how we are going to treat each other in the classroom. Students were asked to type the response to these questions: 1. How do you want to be treated by Mrs. Campbell, 2. How do you think Mrs. Campbell wants to be treated by you? 3. How should students treat each other? 4. How should we treat each other when there is conflict?

I took the student responses to those questions and pasted them into wordle to create the word clouds below. Now, I would like for students to vote on which wordle they would like to be printed and posted in the class. Students have until September 14th to vote by leaving a comment to this blog post. Going from left to right, use the number 1, 2, 3, or 4 to cast your vote in a post below.

moodle and more

On Friday, students used Moodle to show me what they know about Art by taking a Visual Arts pre-test. This is being graded on participation only and the data will be used as a driving force behind instruction. Basic Art concepts dealing with Elements and Principles of Design were covered as well as understanding of how various Art materials function.

It was very informative for me to see where the kids are at and what I need to do to get them to where they need to be. I look forward to using this test again at the end of the term and comparing the results!

In addition, students also used this website to do their social contracts and artist statements. If you notice a missing grade for either of those projects in PowerSchool, then go to Moodle to get the work done.

7th grade students also finished their Modified Blind Contour Drawings and I took their pictures for an upcoming PhotoShop project.

In After School Art, students finished their Artist Trading Cards to be swapped with a school in Canada and are now preparing plaster strips for mold making next week!

Students also have the option of attending the ArtPrize field trip on the 23rd. More information can be found on my website.

It was a very fun, exciting, and full week of activities - and it's only the first week of school! Can't wait to see what happens next week and each week after as we get into full swing!

8th grade students finished their exquisite corpse game drawings. As soon as they finished, I uploaded the work to Artsonia and hung it on the wall. Students now need to write their artist statements by logging into Moodle and following the directions.

Students finished their bowls, created portfolios and selected their portion from the large Exquisite Corpse drawing!

It was a packed day full of art, ideas, and getting to know my students a little better.

Today was the first day of school and with tradition, we started it out with making some art!

7th grade students used clay to create bowls for the upcoming Empty Bowls event. This annual event raises food, funds, and awareness to fight hunger in our community.

8th grade students played the exquisite corpse game where students made a massive drawing that was both random and collaborative.

Both activities were a GREAT way to start the year!

With ArtPrize just around the corner, I wanted to make sure you all were aware and ready for Sooper Art 2011, too!

Last year we had a number of students receive recognition from this contest. In addition to having their work on display at the Grand Rapids Art Museum, winning students also received $100 savings bonds each!

As the start of school soon approaches, I am putting the last minute touches on getting the classroom up to tip-top shape. I am excited for the first day and what is planned for this upcoming year! 7th grade students can expect to use clay on the first day and make the ceramic bowls for the Empty Bowls event later this Spring. 8th grade students will start out with a game known as The Exquisite Corpse Game - a parlor game that has each participant build off of a drawing started and continued by other participants. Both first day activities should provide a lot of fun and creativity in the Art room!
